31 Years Ago, Gundam Ended Its Best Series (& It Still Needs a Revival)

For over 30 years, fans have been hoping for a strong revival of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. As one of the most important mecha anime series ever created, Mobile Suit Gundam has had a huge impact on science fiction. Over the decades, the franchise has explored countless different stories, timelines, and worlds, but a true return to form is still highly anticipated.

Some Gundam anime series are more popular and well-remembered than others, and certain installments haven’t received the attention they deserve. Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which finished airing in Japan on March 31, 1995, hasn’t had any new sequels, revivals, or related projects in 31 years, despite strong fan demand. A proper return for the series now would be a welcome surprise.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam Ended 31 Years Ago Today

Mobile Fighter G Gundam was a significant departure from previous installments in the long-running Gundam series. Unlike earlier shows, G Gundam took place in its own unique timeline. Instead of a continuous war, nations across the solar system settled their disputes through the “Gundam Fight,” a tournament held every few years where representatives battled each other using giant robots. This tournament also had its own distinct set of rules.

Gundam battles were fought to the finish, with pilots needing to destroy the head of their opponent’s mobile suit. The winning country earned the right to rule over the others until the next tournament. The 13th tournament introduces Domon Kasshu, representing Neo Japan, as he searches for his lost brother. Piloting the Shining Gundam, Domon quickly uncovers a sinister plot involving his master, a mysterious Dark Gundam, and other hidden threats.

Essentially, G Gundam was created to revitalize the Gundam anime franchise, which was losing viewers. The series introduced a completely new storyline and heavily embraced the style of “Super Robot” anime, drawing inspiration from martial arts and other sources. For instance, the Shining Gundam featured a transformation similar to the “Super Saiyan” form, significantly boosting Domon’s power for the rest of the show. The focus shifted from long-range warfare and strategy to intense, close-quarters combat, emphasizing fighting spirit over tactical brilliance.

G Gundam Still Needs a Revival or Sequel

Although Mobile Fighter G Gundam recently returned with a short anime revival and a sequel story, it wasn’t the full-scale comeback many fans were hoping for. While G Gundam aimed to introduce a new, younger audience to the franchise with a fresh start, it wasn’t well-received initially. However, it’s held up better over time than some other series released since then. Sadly, the franchise hasn’t revisited this approach since.

While some people involved with the original G Gundam have expressed interest in a new project, it hasn’t moved forward. The great thing about the Gundam series is that anything is possible. We’ve recently seen older Gundam shows get revived with new content, and even less popular series have received sequels and movies. G Gundam might have been considered too unusual in the past, but the Gundam franchise has evolved so much that’s no longer a concern.

A new take on Mobile Fighter G Gundam could easily fit in with the current Gundam anime being made. This series was incredibly innovative and really expanded what the franchise could be, which is a big reason why Gundam has stayed popular for over 40 years – it’s always been able to reinvent itself for new audiences. Despite all the reboots and updates, G Gundam‘s unique energy and fighting style are unmatched. You just don’t see the same level of creativity – like a Gundam based on a Mexican cactus – in other series anymore, and that’s a loss.
