A forgotten series that once competed with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has unexpectedly returned after 31 years with a new release on streaming. Power Rangers is also developing a reboot for Disney+, offering fans a fresh take on the beloved franchise after three decades. During the original series’ popularity, many other shows emerged, attempting to replicate its success as the trend of adapting Japanese Tokusatsu programs with added content grew in the United States.

I’ve always been fascinated by how many Tokusatsu shows started getting released internationally, especially when everyone was trying to compete with Power Rangers! Some of those adaptations really took off, but sadly, others never got the attention they deserved and just kind of faded away. It’s amazing to see a show like Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad – one that felt totally lost to time – actually make a comeback after 31 years with a surprise release on RetroCrush! It’s a real treat for fans like me.

RetroCrush is now streaming all 53 episodes of Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad! This show, based on the Japanese series Gridman the Hyper Agent, will likely bring back fond memories for millennials who watched it on Saturday mornings. It was created by Tsuburaya Productions in collaboration with DIC Productions, the company also known for bringing the first English dub of Sailor Moon to audiences, and offered a unique viewing experience.

I remember when Beetleborgs first came out, everyone expected it to be similar to shows like Power Rangers or VR Troopers. But it quickly became something else entirely. It followed a group of kids – Matthew Lawrence, who was really the star – who somehow got pulled inside a video game. They had to fight off all sorts of computer viruses, and they did it by putting on special armor that turned them into super-powered heroes. It was a really different take on the genre back then, but for some reason, it’s mostly been forgotten outside of Japan.

The original Gridman the Hyper Agent unexpectedly received a follow-up in the form of a full anime series. Inspired by both the original show and its English adaptation, SSSS.Gridman became very popular upon release. This success led to a spin-off series and a movie that concluded the entire story. With the classic series now re-released, it’s a great time to discover what everyone’s been talking about.
