33 Years Ago Today, Marvel Changed the Future of the X-Men Forever and Planted Major MCU Seeds

The X-Men comics have always been popular with readers. After a creative boost in the 1970s, the team’s sales really took off, and characters like Wolverine, Storm, and Cyclops became well-known within the comic book world. Their stories about dealing with prejudice and finding acceptance connected with a loyal audience. While the X-Men weren’t widely recognized outside of comics, that changed with the premiere of X-Men: The Animated Series on Fox Kids on October 31, 1992. This show sparked a huge wave of interest and paved the way for the superhero movies we enjoy today.

As a huge fan of animation and comics, I remember when X-Men: The Animated Series first came out – it was a total game-changer! It wasn’t just a kids’ show; it really dove into the complicated stories from the comics, telling them over multiple episodes. It got so many people hooked on the X-Men, turning them into household names. Seeing how popular the cartoon became, 20th Century Fox – who owned the movie rights since ’94 – finally decided a live-action X-Men movie could actually be a huge hit.

The 2000 film X-Men was a major breakthrough for Marvel, showing that superhero movies could be taken seriously. Along with the earlier success of Blade in 1998 and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, X-Men proved these characters had huge potential on the big screen, after years of failed attempts. These films paved the way for the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, it’s come full circle – the mutants are finally becoming a central part of the MCU itself.

The MCU Mutant Expansion Is Finally a Reality

For many years, fans dreamed of seeing the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but complicated ownership issues kept that from happening. The film rights to the X-Men characters had been with 20th Century Fox since 1994, and they built their own movie universe around them for over twenty years. Everything changed when Disney bought Fox in 2019, bringing the rights back to Marvel. Since then, Marvel Studios has been gradually adding mutants to its existing universe. A great example is X-Men ’97, which premiered in 2024 as a continuation of the popular 1992 cartoon. It’s been a hit with critics and successfully uses the MCU’s style of long-term storytelling to bring the classic show to a new audience.

The impact of bringing these characters to life in live-action has been huge. Deadpool & Wolverine was a massive box office hit, successfully connecting the older X-Men films with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse. It even became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, showing just how much fans love these characters. Things are set to get even bigger with the return of the original X-Men cast from the 2000s. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden are all confirmed to reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops in the next Avengers film, cementing their place in the MCU’s future. This all started with X-Men: The Animated Series, which remains a fantastic superhero adaptation.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
