33 Years Later, Star Trek Just Released a Secret Sequel to a Classic Next Generation Episode

The latest Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, feels like the perfect way to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary. Taking place in the 32nd century, as the Federation recovers from a massive event called “the Burn,” each episode is full of references to established Star Trek history. The show has already made some big connections to the past, including moving Federation headquarters to Betazed (a familiar planet from The Next Generation), explaining what happened to the Klingons, and even providing a satisfying conclusion to the story of Deep Space Nine.

The sixth episode of Starfleet Academy stands out from the rest, marking a turning point in the series. It features a joint training exercise between the Academy and War College that quickly spirals out of control. With the highest stakes yet, the episode officially introduces the alien race known as the Sirens and concludes with the students shocked after Starfleet is cleverly defeated. However, amidst all the drama, it’s easy to overlook that this episode secretly continues the story from a memorable episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Introduces the Miyazaki

The sixth episode of Starfleet Academy features the USS Miyazaki, a famous Starfleet ship that operated from 3067 to 3069. The crew’s bravery and incredible missions made them legendary – they were practically the ‘Enterprise’ of their era. This period was challenging for the Federation, as space travel became riskier following the Burn, which nearly eliminated dilithium supplies. The Federation equipped the Miyazaki with a new, untested “singularity drive,” but the experiment ended in disaster.

The ship’s singularity drive suffered a complete and devastating failure, causing extensive damage and many injuries. The number of survivors is unknown, but the crew was left stranded far out in space, beyond the reach of any immediate rescue. Despite being severely damaged, the ship’s computer attempted to save them, but ultimately, the entire crew of the Miyazaki perished. It was a tragic loss for a highly respected team, and the Federation remembered them as heroes.

The Miyazaki was eventually found by the War College and used for training exercises for cadets. These missions constantly highlighted the dangers of space while also celebrating Starfleet’s brave history. In the Starfleet Academy episode 6, another training exercise on the ship ended in tragedy, adding to the Miyazaki’s already unfortunate story.

The Miyazaki’s Singularity Drive Calls Back to Star Trek: Voyager

We’ve encountered the idea of a “singularity drive” before, and understanding what it is helps explain the severity of the Miyazaki disaster. This technology actually originated with the Romulans, as seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Face of the Enemy.” In that episode, Counselor Deanna Troi infiltrates Romulan space, revealing that their “singularity drive” gives them a major edge in battle, even against powerful ships like the Enterprise.

A singularity drive is a starship’s power source unlike any other. Most ships create energy by carefully controlling a matter-antimatter reaction, but a singularity drive uses an artificially created black hole – also known as a singularity – for power. This could provide almost limitless energy, making it very appealing to Starfleet, especially because it wouldn’t rely on dilithium, which had become scarce and risky after the Burn. However, singularity drives come with significant challenges.

The biggest risk with a singularity drive is straightforward: if the systems meant to control it fail, the intense gravity will destroy the ship. This is what happened to the Miyazaki, completely disabling it. Interestingly, the same problem actually helps the Starfleet Academy cadets in episode 6. They exploit the gravity waves created by the drive to break through the jamming field, allowing transporters to reach and rescue them from the disabled Miyazaki.

You know, watching episode 6 of Starfleet Academy really made me think about who the real enemy is. Sure, the Furies are scary – these bloodthirsty creatures are definitely a threat. But honestly, it’s Nus Braka who’s the truly dangerous one. The Federation completely underestimated him, and he’s been playing the long game, waiting for the perfect moment to reveal himself and attack. It’s chilling how they didn’t see him coming until it was almost too late!
