Today marks 35 years since The Simpsons aired an episode widely considered to be its best – even creator Matt Groening calls it his favorite! The show is currently in its 37th season and has been renewed by FOX through Season 40, proving its lasting popularity. While fans have many beloved episodes, some stand out as favorites among the people who actually make the show.
Can you believe it’s been 35 years?! On December 6th, 1990, The Simpsons gave us the incredible “Bart the Daredevil” episode. As a huge fan, I always think about that Season 2 episode – especially Homer’s attempt to jump the Springfield Gorge! It’s become one of the most memorable moments in the whole series, and it’s actually Matt Groening’s personal favorite too! He told Entertainment Weekly ten years into the show’s run that it was the episode for him, all because of that hilarious, iconic Homer fail.
Why Bart the Devil is Matt Groening’s Favorite

Matt Groening has always loved the “Bart the Daredevil” episode, particularly the scene where Homer tries, and fails, to skateboard across Springfield Gorge. He considers the aftermath – Homer being loaded into an ambulance that crashes into a tree, sending him tumbling back over the cliff on a gurney – to be the funniest moment in the entire series. It’s a truly chaotic bit of comedy, and Homer’s failed jump has become one of the most memorable scenes in the show’s history.
Early in its run, The Simpsons had a breakthrough moment that really defined the show. Before this, the series was relatively realistic for a cartoon, with quirky stories but nothing too outlandish. This scene, which felt like something straight out of Looney Tunes, marked a shift in style. It allowed Homer and the other characters to be much more dynamic and paved the way for the creative experimentation that became a hallmark of the show’s best years.
Why Bart the Daredevil Is So Special
The episode “Bart the Daredevil” was particularly memorable for the relationship between Bart and Homer, which is central to many Simpsons stories. In it, Bart starts performing risky stunts, and Homer tries to intervene, famously attempting to jump over a gorge himself. This scene became iconic and was referenced with hidden details and nods throughout later seasons of the show.
Over the decades, The Simpsons has subjected Homer to many hilarious and challenging situations, but this particular scene remains one of his most memorable physical gags. It’s a standout moment, even after all these years – still funny after 35 years, and a favorite of the show’s creator, Matt Groening.
