35 Years Later, Classic Fantasy Series Confirms Anime Revival

As a longtime anime fan, I’m really looking forward to 2026! It looks like a classic shojo manga is finally getting an anime adaptation, which is fantastic news. For years, the shonen genre has been the biggest force in anime and manga – think of hugely popular series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto. While shonen gets most of the attention, shojo stories often offer something really special and unique. The 90s were a great time for both genres, but shojo produced some truly memorable series back then that people still love today.

Kyoko Hikawa’s series, From Far Away: Kanata Kara, originally came out in 1991. After 35 years, it’s finally getting an anime adaptation, which was announced with a short teaser. The anime is planned for release this year, but a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.

From Far Away: Kanata Kara Confirms Anime Announcement

Talk about an anime version started in February when social media accounts like @MangaMoguraRE noticed a new website registered with the show’s title. This kind of activity usually means an official announcement is coming very soon – within a few weeks, most likely.

With the manga celebrating its 35th anniversary, now is a great time for a new anime adaptation! While the animation studio and voice actors haven’t been announced yet, the official website has confirmed that Noriyuki Abe will direct. Abe is well-known for his work on popular series like Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho. Since the anime is planned for release this year, we should hear more details in the coming weeks or months.

What Is The Plot of From Far Away: Kanata Kara?

Noriko Tachiki is a typical high school student who keeps dreaming of a stunning, magical world. This dream is filled with delicate, see-through flowers, a golden bird in flight, and other fantastical sights, leading her to believe it exists in another world. One day, on her way home from school with friends, she’s caught in an explosion and vanishes without a trace.

She never imagined her dreams would become reality, but suddenly she found herself in the world she often dreamt of. Surprisingly, this dream world turned out to be far more perilous than beautiful. Stranded with no way home, she fought to survive in a monster-filled forest. Luckily, a mysterious man named Izark Kia Tarj rescued her, though they couldn’t understand each other’s language.

Knowing she couldn’t survive alone, she chooses to follow Izark. As the story unfolds, Noriko discovers she’s connected to an old prophecy and this strange new world. The series originally ran from September 1991 to January 2003, and was collected into 14 volumes. You can find both print and digital copies at Viz Media’s official website.
