Most people know Wolverine’s story: a fierce, animalistic mutant who can heal quickly and has an unbreakable skeleton and claws. These enhancements were the result of the Weapon X Project, a top-secret program during the Cold War designed to create the ultimate soldier. Similar to the project that created Captain America, Weapon X aimed to build a covert operative – a silent killer working from the shadows – rather than a public hero. The result was Wolverine, a far cry from Captain America’s shining example.
This classic story originally appeared in Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 back in 1991. It’s a compelling narrative, which is why fans have generally accepted a minor inconsistency in Wolverine’s origins. Powerful healing abilities are rare, even among mutants, and Logan’s is exceptionally strong – boosted after a close encounter with death during World War I. His healing factor allowed him to withstand the process of having adamantium bonded to his skeleton, and it also prevents the adamantium from poisoning him. This raises a question: how did the Weapon X program manage to find the one mutant capable of surviving their brutal experiments?
We Now Know Weapon X Had A Mutant Tracker
The first issue of Marvel’s Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, from creators Chip Zdarsky, Jesus Aburtov, and Luca Maresca, reveals a long-held secret about Wolverine’s past. The story begins with a flashback to the night Wolverine joined the Weapon X Project. While at a pub, he meets Teri O’Barnes, a mutant with the ability to locate people using a psychic power, not by following physical clues. It’s revealed Teri’s mission was to find a mutant who could heal quickly.
The scene opens quickly, with Logan misinterpreting Teri’s attention as flirtation. However, she’s actually observing him closely, trying to determine if he has a healing ability. She quickly notices his high alcohol tolerance and then spots glass embedded in his beard, revealing he recently took a beating in a bar fight without sustaining any injuries. This is exactly what Teri needed to see – proof that Logan is the perfect candidate for the Weapon X program.
It’s important to remember that Teri didn’t know anything about Weapon X when she got involved. She was very trusting and inexperienced at the time, which led her to take a job with a secret, and ultimately dangerous, scientific project. Since then, she’s devoted her life to fixing the damage she caused, and even Logan has forgiven her.
The long-standing mystery of how Wolverine was chosen for the adamantium bonding process – a major plot hole for years – has finally been explained. The answer is Teri O’Barnes, a clever addition to Wolverine’s backstory. It turns out Wolverine’s creation wasn’t just the work of humans, but also involved a mutant who unknowingly helped them, tragically betraying her fellow mutants.
