Fans are finally getting the villain backstory they’ve been waiting for with the new Maul – Shadow Lord TV series. Despite seemingly dying, Maul returned in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and became a threat to Darth Sidious. The series takes place right after Palpatine’s victory and during the dark early years of the Empire, focusing on Maul’s struggle to survive in a changed and dangerous galaxy.
A new clip from Maul – Shadow Lord showcases the incredible power and danger of the Sith Apprentice. When faced with Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Maul casually destroys a walkway, knowing a Jedi would prioritize saving anyone on it. This display of effortless Force ability highlights why Palpatine believed Maul was a worthy apprentice and a perfect fit for the Sith’s Rule of Two.
There’s a crisis unfolding on the walkway! The brand-new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be available to stream on Disney+ starting April 6th.

We’ve Never Seen Darth Maul’s Powers On This Scale Before
“Maul – Shadow Lord” is easily one of the most captivating Star Wars shows created so far. It’s unique because it tells a story entirely from the villain’s point of view – something we haven’t seen before. While “The Acolyte” briefly explored this idea, it was cut short after a single, divisive season. Maul, however, has become a truly great Star Wars villain. Though we know his ultimate fate (thanks to “Star Wars Rebels”), this series focuses on a previously untold part of his life.
The trailers for Maul – Shadow Lord are visually striking, with a unique style that resembles a painted animation rather than traditional animation. This is especially noticeable with the lightsaber effects, which look incredible. We’re also starting to see the impressive scope of the Force powers Maul will wield. His abilities in this series align with his actions in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he managed to destroy a Venator Star Destroyer by pulling it out of hyperspace.
As a huge fan, I can honestly say this is Maul at his absolute peak! It’s amazing to see him so strong – it really feels like the dark side is growing and empowering him. Honestly, he seems like a bigger danger to Palpatine and Vader than any Jedi ever were, because he’s rising in power with the darkness. That probably explains why we haven’t seen him this powerful before. If these teasers are anything to go by, the full story is going to be incredible!
Sharp-eyed fans have noticed that Master Eeko-Dio Daki has had to leave his apprentice, the Twi’lek Devon Izara, behind. It’s unknown why Maul took Devon with him, but it doesn’t look good for the young Padawan. Many believe Maul will try to turn Devon to the dark side, potentially establishing this version of the character as Darth Talon – a Sith Lord originally conceived by George Lucas as a student of Maul. The dynamic between Maul and Devon will be central to the Shadow Lord storyline, and this appears to be an early setup for the series.
