Sam Raimi, famous for directing the Spider-Man trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has exciting news about one of his earlier films. Before his Marvel success, Raimi wanted to create a superhero movie but couldn’t secure the rights to an existing Marvel or DC character. So, he created his own hero and made Darkman. Now, this cult classic might be getting a remake!
Sam Raimi recently told ComicBook that he’s hoping to remake his 1990 film, Darkman. He explained, “I’ve been trying to get a Darkman remake made, but I don’t think the studio even remembers the original!”
Sam Raimi has discussed a potential remake of Darkman before. He recently told Movieweb that his production company, Ghost House Pictures, is actively working on it. They have a script and two promising directors attached, but are currently facing challenges securing the necessary funding – a common issue in filmmaking, according to Raimi.
According to Dread Central, the two directors mentioned are Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, who directed the 2024 Netflix thriller Don’t Move. Sam Raimi produced that film. Schindler explained that when discussing Sam Raimi’s work, Darkman is a key reference point, as they frequently talked about it with him and are both big fans of the movie.
What Could a Darkman Reboot Look Like?
While there have been two follow-up films to the original Darkman, they aren’t memorable because neither featured director Sam Raimi or star Liam Neeson. The 1990 film Darkman stars Liam Neeson as Dr. Peyton Westlake, a scientist developing an artificial skin to help people with burns. His life is turned upside down when a crime boss sends criminals to search for a document his girlfriend may have had, leading to the destruction of his lab and an attempt on his life.
The film tells the story of how he became a scarred and disfigured vigilante. He relied on artificial skin – which unfortunately deteriorated in sunlight – to pursue the crime boss responsible for ruining his life. While the first movie received positive reviews and did reasonably well in theaters, its two sequels, The Return of Durant and Die Darkman Die, were released directly to video and were considered inferior to the original.
Sam Raimi, the original director of Darkman, is hoping to update the film for a modern audience with a new filmmaking team. While he wasn’t involved in the previous sequels, the character has gained a following through a series of well-received comic books. With today’s improved special effects technology, a remake could be very successful, particularly if it retains the original film’s unique blend of dark humor and thrills.
