Studio Ghibli is famous for its wonderful anime films, many of which were directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is a highly acclaimed director, considered one of the best in Japan, and has brought Japanese animation to audiences around the world. He’s also a talented manga artist, making him a truly exceptional figure in the anime world. Notably, he was the first anime director to win an Academy Award, and his films remain classics years after they were first released. As a co-founder of Studio Ghibli – established in 1985 with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata – Miyazaki has been central to the studio’s success. Ghibli is well-known for its merchandise, and they’ve recently released the sixth collection of artwork from Miyazaki’s Image Board Collection.
What to Expect From Studio Ghibli in 2026
I’m so excited – Miyazaki is working on a new film! It’s still under wraps, and the studio hasn’t revealed anything yet, which just makes the anticipation even better. Everyone thought he’d retire after The Boy and the Heron came out last year, but he’s still at it, which is incredible considering his age and health. And that’s not all! Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita are also making a short anime for Ghibli Park. It’s a really busy time for Studio Ghibli, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
The film will be shown at the Orion theater within the Ghibli Grand Warehouse park starting July 8th. While the studio hasn’t announced any other anime releases for 2026 beyond this short film, fans can still enjoy the yearly Studio Ghibli Fest in North America, running from July to October.
After the popular IMAX showing of Princess Mononoke last March, IMAX and GKIDS are teaming up again to release more Studio Ghibli films in the IMAX format. These versions will be created using new 4K restorations and carefully checked by Ghibli animator Atsushi Okui. Okui has worked on many classic Ghibli films, including Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron, as a cinematographer and director of photography for several years.
