A beloved RPG originally released by Square Enix in 1987 is surprisingly popular on Xbox Game Pass in 2026. While many longtime fans are revisiting this SNES classic thanks to the subscription service, it’s also attracting new players. Despite being from a different era, it remains a groundbreaking RPG that any serious fan of the genre should try.
I’ve been checking out what everyone’s playing on Game Pass, and it’s awesome to see the original Final Fantasy is super popular right now! It’s consistently near the top of the “Most Popular” list for both PC and Xbox. Honestly, I’m not surprised it’s doing so well on PC – it feels like there’s a bigger group of dedicated gamers on that platform who really appreciate classic RPGs like this one.
Not the Best Final Fantasy Game, But the First
The very first Final Fantasy game, which originally came out only for the NES, isn’t considered one of the best in the series. However, it was a groundbreaking role-playing game and is hugely important because it launched the incredibly popular Final Fantasy franchise – and one of the most beloved video game series of all time.
We don’t know how long this game will be available on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft usually doesn’t share that information upfront. Most games added to the service have contracts lasting either 12 or 24 months, and while there’s no confirmation for this title, it’s likely to follow a similar pattern.
Unlike recent Final Fantasy games that require a huge time commitment, the original game is much shorter and more accessible. When it was released in 1987, games weren’t nearly as lengthy, and this classic RPG can be completed in around 15 to 17 hours. This may be why many subscribers are giving it a try, especially since the subscription service hasn’t added many new or exciting games lately, leading people to revisit a game from almost four decades ago.
