39 Years Later, Dragon Ball Super Artist Celebrates a Beloved Nostalgia Character With a New Look

With Dragon Ball Super currently paused following the passing of its creator, Akira Toriyama, artist Toyotaro is continuing a personal project called “Toyotaro Drew This.” This project started in December 2017 and features monthly artwork of Dragon Ball characters who didn’t get much focus in the main story. Over time, Toyotaro has created more than 90 illustrations of characters often overlooked or underrated, such as Captain Ginyu, Bardock, Raditz, Gregory, and others. The newest installment, released in September 2025, shows a fresh take on Grandpa Gohan, wearing his classic outfit, but drawn in Toyotaro’s style.

As a child, he was Goku’s most beloved family member. The image of him was posted on the official Dragon Ball website, along with a short description of when Goku and he reunited at Fortuneteller Baba’s palace-Goku excitedly jumped on him and started crying. The accompanying text highlights him as a skilled martial artist and a person of exceptional integrity. It’s been 39 years since Granpa Gohan first appeared in the series, and he hasn’t shown up often. Still, he remains a cherished figure for fans as someone close to the main character.

Who Is Granpa Gohan in Dragon Ball?

Grandpa Gohan was the adoptive grandfather of Goku and the top student of Master Roshi. Sadly, he passed away before the story began, during a time when Goku transformed into a Great Ape and was out of control. Because Grandpa Gohan was Goku’s only family, the young boy was devastated and searched everywhere for him, but couldn’t find him. Goku didn’t remember causing his grandfather’s death and thought he had been killed by a monster, believing his spirit was now inside the Four-Star Dragon Ball. During the Fortuneteller Baba arc, Grandpa Gohan secretly revealed himself and tried to show Goku a weakness by grabbing his tail, but it ended up falling off by accident.

Soon after what happened, Goku had a quick, emotional meeting with him in the original Dragon Ball series. Later, in Dragon Ball Z, Master Roshi explained that Grandpa Gohan discovered him as a baby in the forest close to his house, after Goku’s spaceship crashed on Earth. Raising Goku was challenging because he was a wild and aggressive infant, but his behavior improved after he suffered a head injury.

The accident changed Goku’s naturally fierce Saiyan personality, making him kind and innocent-a crucial moment in the story. Goku was unaware of his true origins and birth name, Kakarot, until he reached adulthood. Because of his love and respect for his grandfather, Goku named his first son after him and even placed a Four-Star Dragon Ball on his hat as a way to remember his adoptive grandfather. While battling Vegeta, Goku transformed into his Great Ape form and discovered he was the one who had killed his grandfather.
