While many anime from the 1990s feel nostalgic, not all of them are enjoyable to watch now. However, some series remain timeless—and can even resonate more strongly with modern viewers. Many beloved ’90s anime shaped Millennials’ childhoods, but they still reflect the conventions of that era. Things like awkward dialogue, outdated storylines, and slow pacing can make it hard to revisit these shows today, or even start them for the first time.
It’s natural for older anime to show some signs of aging. However, the truly great ones still connect with audiences through relatable characters, compelling stories, and timeless themes, all presented in an enjoyable way. Whether it’s a show about ghosts or a space adventure, these classics generally hold up well.
4) Yu Yu Hakusho

While some aspects of Yu Yu Hakusho, which first aired in 1992, understandably feel a bit dated – the animation isn’t on par with today’s standards, and some jokes haven’t aged well – the core story is still incredibly captivating. In fact, it holds up remarkably well. The beginning of Yusuke’s story is still surprising, even now, and his path to becoming a better person is genuinely engaging. The series’ best moments remain truly epic, like everything in the Dark Tournament arc. Ultimately, Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime that’s perfect for both newcomers and longtime fans, and it’s a lot of fun to revisit.
3) Berserk

The 1997 anime adaptation of Berserk is considered one of the greatest dark fantasy anime of all time. It brilliantly captures the mood and feeling of the manga’s Golden Age arc, though the animation looks a bit dated now. What really stands out is its strong character development and emotionally impactful story that stays with you long after you finish watching. The only real drawback is that it doesn’t adapt the entire manga series, which is unfortunate considering how well it handles the parts that are included.
3) Neon Genesis Evangelion

Okay, so Neon Genesis Evangelion might not have the slickest animation by today’s standards, but trust me, it’s a classic for a reason – and it’s way more than just people remembering it fondly. What really blew me away was how incredibly well-developed the characters are. It digs so deep into what makes them tick, exploring things like trauma and the need for human connection in a way that still feels relevant and powerful. Honestly, it was pretty daring for its time, and it still holds up beautifully. I genuinely think everyone should experience this series at least once – it’s that good.
1) Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop remains a standout anime, with animation and storytelling that still feel fresh decades later—and it might even resonate more deeply today. The crew of quirky bounty hunters are as engaging as ever, and their heartwarming found-family bond never gets old. The adventures are still exciting, with action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But what truly stands the test of time is the show’s exploration of finding meaning in life. The characters grapple with their pasts and present, a struggle that will particularly connect with adult viewers. Those who loved Cowboy Bebop when they were younger may find it even more impactful now, and even original adult fans will admit the anime’s complex and somewhat bleak world feels surprisingly relevant to our current times.
