4 Action Movie Sequels Even Better Than the Original

By 2025, several action sequels like “The Accountant 2” were released, yet none quite matched their originals. Generally, sequels struggle to rival or outdo their predecessors, no matter the genre. However, these four action movies did more than just match their earlier versions; they exceeded them. The reasons for their success vary. Sometimes it’s because the initial film was a promising start, but ultimately average. Other times, the sequel improved upon and enhanced the aspects that made the original movie good to begin with.

It’s important to understand that these movies needed to be traditional, non-sci-fi action films. That means there won’t be any mind-boggling or puzzling titles like “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” on the list.

1) Lethal Weapon 2

At a minimum, “Lethal Weapon 2” matches up to its original counterpart in quality. Though Shane Black didn’t pen the script this time (he initially conceived the storyline), the movie still delivers with intelligence and vigor, boasting an even more impressive main antagonist than the first film. Additionally, while the dynamic between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover was potent from the start, it’s significantly stronger in the sequel.

In addition to being known for its gripping storyline, Lethal Weapon 2 is particularly memorable for what are widely considered three of the most iconic scenes within the franchise. One unforgettable moment is the heart-wrenching beach death of Rika van den Haas, played by Patsy Kensit. Another standout scene features Arjen Rudd (Joss Ackland), who exclaims “Diplomatic immunity!” prior to being shot by Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who retorts “immunity has just been revoked.” Lastly, there’s the sequence where Murtaugh finds himself in a humorous yet intense situation, seated on a bomb-rigged toilet that will explode the moment he stands up. Few sequels can boast such an intense and amusing scene.

2) John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

In a remarkable fashion, no action series has crafted such an immersive cinematic universe quite like the one found in the John Wick films. Among the four outstanding mainline movies, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum stands out as the most exceptional. With a runtime of 131 minutes, it’s not as lengthy as its successor and boasts what might be the franchise’s finest gunfight-the thrilling alliance between John and Charon to protect The Continental.

In addition, similar to other films in the Wick series, several characters play significant roles in fleshing out this expansive universe. Mark Dacascos’ quirky assassin Zero is entertaining, Halle Berry’s Sofia Al-Azwar might be John Wick’s best ally yet, and Asia Kate Dillon’s Adjudicator makes for a fantastic corporate antagonist with cold precision. Moreover, the fight choreography in this installment could possibly take the crown (a high praise indeed). For instance, there’s an initial fight sequence involving bladed weapons, where John confronts nearly a dozen assassins in a deadly tool store. Later, we witness a prolonged battle between John and Sofia, her two dogs, which fortunately results in both the canines escaping unharmed.

3) The Expendables 2

If each movie in the The Expendables series matched the quality of The Expendables 2, it could potentially be the top action franchise starring Jason Statham. However, that’s not how it pans out. The initial film is decent, but unfortunately, the following two movies have fallen flat for different reasons.

In this installment, all elements have been skillfully assembled. The cast’s camaraderie shines brighter, almost every action hero fittingly present contributes to the battle, and Jean-Claude Van Damme delivers an impressive villain portrayal. Although the Expendables films are not known for their artistic merit, The Expendables 2 embraces its non-artistic nature confidently, and it succeeds in doing so.

4) Mad Max: Fury Road

Packed with two memorable leading performances, relentless high-speed action scenes, and an array of stylish vehicles, Mad Max: Fury Road was swiftly recognized as not only one of the top action films in recent memory, but among the greatest ever made. And it truly deserves that recognition, for it certainly lives up to the hype.

The elements of Fury Road are seamlessly crafted, from its fast-moving tempo to its non-conventional storytelling (the film begins without introduction and maintains its high speed throughout). Despite the likely challenges in production, it was undeniably rewarding as George Miller’s reentry into the franchise post Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome eclipses even the greatness of The Road Warrior, leaving it far behind.
