4 Anime That Desperately Need New Video Games, And Why They’re Perfect For It

Anime and video games are frequently connected, with many popular game series also having successful anime adaptations, like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. The recent release of Digimon Story: Time Stranger shows there’s still a strong demand for quality game versions of beloved anime. While many anime-inspired games come out every year, some popular anime franchises are noticeably missing from today’s gaming scene. There are lots of anime that would make fantastic games, either as brand new adaptations or updated versions of older titles.

I’ve been revisiting some of my favorite anime this year by playing their video game adaptations. I especially enjoyed *Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection* and *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*. Playing *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* got me thinking about other great anime that deserve modern video games. While not every anime would work well as a game, these four seem perfectly suited for it.

4. Cardcaptor Sakura

With card battling games and magical girl anime being so popular, it’s surprising there aren’t more well-known *Cardcaptor Sakura* video games. While the series has inspired several RPGs, those console games haven’t been released in most parts of the world. As a result, many fans – including me – haven’t had the chance to play a *Cardcaptor Sakura* game.

Besides a few mobile games like the recent *Cardcaptor Sakura: Memory Key*, this series has a lot of potential for a full-fledged console RPG that could be released globally. It features card collecting and battles, plenty of character customization options with fun costumes, and an engaging fantasy world.

3. Sailor Moon

I’m a huge magical girl fan, and like with *Cardcaptor Sakura*, it’s really surprising how few *Sailor Moon* games we’ve gotten over here! Considering how popular *Sailor Moon* still is in the US, you’d think we’d have a really good, modern game to play. A lot of the older games were mostly beat ’em ups and stayed in Japan, though *Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon* did come out worldwide. Sadly, the last new game we got was *Sailor Moon Drops* back in 2016, and that’s no longer available. It’s definitely time for a new *Sailor Moon* game!

The recent remake and first U.S. tour prove that *Sailor Moon* remains incredibly popular, even outside of Japan. Considering today’s amazing gaming technology, a *Sailor Moon* RPG or action game would be stunning and a lot of fun. I’d be happy with either, but ultimately, I want a game where I can defeat evil while dressed as a sailor scout – please!

2. The Apothecary Diaries

I recently became completely absorbed in the anime *Apothecary Diaries*. It’s funny and has a unique setting, which immediately made me think it would make a great video game. While many anime are best suited for role-playing games, I think this one could be something different. With its focus on potion-making and solving mysteries, it’s perfect for a relaxing, story-focused game.

I’d love to see a console game based on *The Apothecary Diaries*! The anime is full of intriguing mysteries, potion-making, and ingredient gathering – it feels like a perfect fit for a game similar to *Potionomics* or *Witchy Life Story*, but with the series’ distinctive charm. While a web browser game, *The Apothecary Diaries: Palace Chronicles*, is in development, I believe the story deserves a more expansive, full-fledged console experience, and I’m eager to play it!

1. Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi)

The anime *Delicious in Dungeon* follows a group of adventurers who are broke and need to find food while exploring a dangerous dungeon. Their solution? They start cooking and eating the monsters they defeat! Heavily inspired by classic role-playing games, the show’s unique mix of adventure and cooking would be perfect as a video game.

Imagine a game like *Dave the Diver*, but with the style of an anime role-playing game. During the day, you’ll explore dungeons in a classic way, but instead of just collecting gold and potions, you’ll gather ingredients from the monsters you defeat. Then, you’ll use those ingredients in a really engaging cooking mini-game. As someone who loves both *Dungeons & Dragons* and cooking simulations, this is a game I’d love to play – and I think it would be a huge success!
