As a movie enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs when it comes to DC on the silver screen. While some films didn’t quite hit the mark, others have managed to meet or even surpass our high expectations. From Superman to Batman, DC houses some of the most enduring superheroes in pop culture history. For years, these iconic characters have graced the big screen, though it wasn’t until recently that we saw a cohesive universe unfold.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) kicked off in 2013 with ‘Man of Steel,’ yet creative challenges and inconsistency stalled its progress. Now, with the DCEU behind us, the birth of the new DC Universe offers a promising future for this beloved franchise. Not every DC film wowed critics or audiences alike, but its top-tier hits continue to capture our hearts.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that the subsequent four DC films stand out as some of the franchise’s most outstanding cinematic achievements. Their uncanny knack for meeting and often surpassing the grand expectations set by the hype simply leaves me in awe.
4) Superman II
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the iconic 1980s adaptation of Superman II. Unlike its 1978 predecessor, Richard Lester’s masterpiece didn’t just meet expectations; it surpassed them. The sequel found Christopher Reeve reprising his role as both Clark Kent and Superman, a performance that dazzled even more than before.
In this continuation, our hero finds himself struggling between his desire for a romantic life with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and the responsibilities of being Superman. This internal conflict leads him to relinquish his powers. But when the Kryptonian villains General Zod (Terence Stamp), Ursa (Sarah Douglas), and Non (Jack O’Halloran) make their ominous appearance, he is forced to reclaim them.
Reeve was simply luminous in this role, encapsulating Superman’s humorous yet genuine persona perfectly. His prowess as an action star was undeniably demonstrated. The return of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, though brief, added an extra layer of delight to the storyline.
Superman II offers a level of entertainment that just edges out Richard Donner’s original film, both of which have been cherished by fans. To this day, Superman II stands tall as one of the best comic book movies ever made, proving beyond doubt that it more than justified the hype surrounding it.
3) Wonder Woman
The iconic status of Wonder Woman as a beloved superhero in the comic book community led to enormous anticipation for her first solo film within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Fortunately, the 2017 release of Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, proved worth the wait. The movie portrays the origin story of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, as she embarks on an adventure in the human world during World War I, experiencing life beyond her Amazonian home. Wonder Woman offers thrilling action scenes and a heartwarming narrative, even with some challenges in its final act. The film deftly combines humor with the somber atmosphere, consistently emphasizing a theme of hope throughout. Multiple viewings continue to make Wonder Woman an engaging experience, earning it recognition as the standout film within the now-defunct DCEU and a superhero title that truly lives up to its buzz.
2) Superman (2025)
In 2025, James Gunn’s highly-anticipated DCU launch didn’t fall short of expectations with the stellar introduction of a new Superman. This groundbreaking film marked the beginning of an interconnected series of DC projects and was filled with a vibrant sense of enthusiasm and optimism. After suffering his first defeat, Superman (played by David Corenswet) grapples with both stopping Boravia from attacking Jarhanpur and mending his relationship issues with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Despite some imperfections, the film’s eccentric humor and infectious joy are hard to resist. Corenswet delivers a Superman performance that comic enthusiasts have been yearning for, infusing authenticity, humanity, and determination into the iconic character. The villainy of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and the entertaining antics of the Justice Gang enrich the storyline further, resulting in an exhilarating superhero film that truly entertains. It’s evident that this new Superman film has lived up to the hype and restored confidence among DC fans in the franchise’s cinematic potential.
1) The Batman
The films featuring Batman have consistently captivated audiences, and the 2022 release, “The Batman”, was no different. Directed by Matt Reeves, this film centers around the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman (portrayed by Robert Pattinson). In this storyline, he confronts criminal activities linked to The Riddler (Paul Dano), The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) within Gotham City. Assisted by Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Batman navigates a complex web of mysteries in an attempt to thwart a chilling conspiracy that threatens the existence of Gotham City. Anticipation for “The Batman” was understandably high, as it proved to be a cinematic masterpiece.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that “The Batman” left me utterly captivated with its hauntingly intense tone, enchanting musical score, and a nuanced portrayal of the Caped Crusader that surpasses even The Dark Knight trilogy. Stepping into such legendary shoes was no small feat, but Matt Reeves managed to craft a compelling narrative that is simply engrossing from beginning to end. With its taut tension and gritty atmosphere, “The Batman” delivers the most immersive experience of Gotham City and superhero action DC has ever offered on the big screen. The anticipation for the sequel in 2027, “The Batman Part II,” is already sky-high, and I can hardly wait to see if they’ll rise to the occasion once more!
Superman is now playing in theaters. The rest of these entries are available to stream on HBO Max.
