For years now, the eagerly awaited title “Hollow Knight: Silksong” has been compared to the upcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI” of the indie gaming world. Following seven years filled with whispers, rumors, and speculation, Team Cherry recently unveiled the long-awaited release date at Gamescom – it’s coming out on September 4th. As I wait for that day, I’ve been looking for games that share even a hint of what made “Hollow Knight” unique: close-knit combat, enigmatic realms, and the thrill of exploration leading to intriguing discoveries.
Sharing anticipation for the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong unites its dedicated fanbase, as a blend of expectation and exasperation maintains their enthusiasm in high spirits. Consequently, my search for alternative games has become necessary. Metroidvanias, action platformers, and other genres have stepped in to fill the void left by Team Cherry. Here are four games I’ve been engrossed in while patiently waiting for Silksong’s arrival.
4) Nine Sols

The game titled “Nine Sols” was initially unveiled in the year 2022, but it wasn’t until May 29, 2024 that players could get their hands on it. Reminiscent of “Hollow Knight”, it quickly caught the attention of gamers due to its stunning art style, which was a blend of familiarity and uniqueness. The game combined intricate platforming with combat that mimicked the soulslike genre. A notable feature was the parry mechanic, reminiscent of “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice”, which added an edge-of-your-seat tension to each battle. To excel in “Nine Sols”, understanding timing and enemy attack patterns became crucial.
Among the standout aspects of the game “Nine Sols” lies its captivating storyline and setting.
3) Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound

Silksong. Developed by The Game Kitchen, renowned for crafting the Metroidvania title Blasphemous, this action platformer clearly showcases traces of the genre’s core DNA. Notably, The Game Kitchen has successfully translated the lightning-fast movements and tough challenge from 3D to 2D that is sure to be a thrill for all fans of Hollow Knight.
Similar to Hollow Knight, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound requires undivided attention. Unlike Hollow Knight, it lacks an open-world exploration aspect, but its combat and platforming are meticulously designed and demanding, yet incredibly rewarding once mastered. The game’s intensity kept me coming back repeatedly, much like persistently battling certain bosses in Hollow Knight until I conquered the seemingly insurmountable odds. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
2) Rogue Prince of Persia

After playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, The Rogue Prince of Persia served as a delightful change. Unlike The Lost Crown, Ubisoft’s subsequent entry abandons the Metroidvania elements and instead emphasizes the roguelike action-platformer aspects, giving it a resemblance to Dead Cells, another well-regarded indie game. Contrasting Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, which prioritizes intense combat, The Rogue Prince of Persia focuses more on platforming within these genres.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been thoroughly captivated by the smooth, dynamic actions in The Rogue Prince of Persia – the wall running, gravity-defying jumps, and parkour combinations create an engaging rhythm that never fails to impress. Although combat takes a back seat, it still commands your focus effectively. However, what truly sets this game apart is its exploration element.
The roguelike design and procedurally generated levels guarantee an exhilarating experience each time you play, as every run presents new challenges and surprises. The intricate branching paths and hidden upgrades keep me engrossed, enticing me to embark on one adventure after another.
The Rogue Prince of Persia is now available across various platforms, including the Nintendo Switch & 2, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
1) Hollow Knight

Whenever I find myself at a loss, I often revisit the timeless charm of the original “Hollow Knight.” No matter how many times I explore it, its magic never fades. The somber melodies of Hallownest, the immersive world design, and the very essence that first captured my heart in “Hollow Knight,” continue to leave an indelible impression. This affection for the game seems to be a universal one, as the announcement of “Hollow Knight: Silksong’s” release date led to a significant surge in its concurrent players, doubling its peak count.
Refreshing Hollow Knight not only keeps my excitement for Silksong in check but also sparks curiosity about its enhancements. Traversing the White Palace once more, battling the Mantis Lords stirs up thoughts on how Team Cherry will surpass Hollow Knight’s greatness. How will Hornet’s new mobility alter exploration? Which unique skills will she employ, and how will the new Silksong kingdom stack up against Hallownest? These questions, along with many more, will be answered on September 4th. For now, you can play Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and 5.
