Over eight seasons and various spin-offs, Dexter, starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, has solidified its lead character as one of the most admired fictional serial killers. Essentially, Dexter is a serial killer who targets other killers, keeping his family and the police at bay. Though he’s unbeatable within his own storyline as the Bay Harbor Butcher, it’s intriguing to ponder how he might measure up against other fictional human killers. Unlike invincible, supernatural figures like Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, these characters rely on their intelligence and wit rather than extreme physical strength and unusual resilience for survival.
Without a doubt, it’s important to note that not all individuals who fit this profile would make a suitable adversary for Dexter. For instance, someone like Patrick Bateman from “American Psycho,” whose mental state might indicate he hasn’t actually killed anyone, would struggle against the Dark Passenger. The same goes for the inexperienced characters from “Scream.” After some research, however, we’ve uncovered several on-screen villains that could potentially outmatch Dexter. Here are our top four picks for horror antagonists who might give Mr. Morgan a tough time.
1) John Doe – Se7en
In simpler terms, John Doe and Dexter Morgan share some characteristics. They both aim to bring justice to the unjust, often connecting their crimes to those of their victims, and they are detail-oriented in planning their kills. However, this is where the comparisons stop. Whilst Dexter can be clever with his targets, John Doe stands out as even more intelligent.
Initially, it’s worth noting that Dexter carries out his killings in accordance with a meticulously crafted set of rules devised by his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, which he refers to as “The Code of Harry.” This code requires Dexter to irrefutably establish the guilt of his targets before taking their lives. However, in the case of John Doe, this task seems almost insurmountable due to factors such as a lack of fingerprints, an unknown true identity, and the technicality that many of his victims appear to have died by suicide rather than murder. As a result, Dexter would find it extremely difficult to uncover solid proof of Doe’s criminal activities.
As I sat down to watch this intriguing film, it was clear that John Doe had meticulously orchestrated his actions, leaving a trail that could potentially lead Dexter Morgan straight to him – perhaps even with the hope of being discovered. In what seems like a chilling reenactment of “Se7en,” the cat-and-mouse game between these two characters promises an enthralling climax. It appears John Doe has ingeniously plotted his own demise at Dexter’s hands, ensuring that the aftermath would be disastrous for Detective Morgan.
While it’s undeniable that Dexter will ultimately end up taking John Doe’s life, the truth is, he’ll merely be carrying out the final act that John Doe has so skillfully scripted. In the end, the enigmatic “Se7en” killer will have the last laugh, as the life of our beloved Dexter Morgan may very well disintegrate, leaving us with a sense of despair and profound reflection on the nature of justice and vengeance.
2) Annie Wilkes – Misery
Annie Wilkes, portrayed by Kathy Bates in Dexter, isn’t typically the type of person Dexter usually faces off against. However, if she found the right incentive, she might make an exception. This homicidal nurse is capable of being both chilling and calculating when necessary but can also be set off with minimal provocation, leading to uncontrollable fury. It’s difficult to foresee a situation that would prompt Dexter to confront Annie, but if such a scenario ever unfolded, it would mark the beginning of his downfall.
Once more, The Code of Harry poses challenges for Dexter, as many of Wilkes’ victims were hospital patients that she allegedly disposed of while performing her duties. Gathering concrete proof of her crimes would necessitate him breaking into Wilkes’ residence to seek evidence, which could lead to his downfall. Engaging Annie on her own ground is equivalent to committing suicide – not the painless kind.
Based on Annie Wilkes’ character from the novel ‘Misery’, it can be reasonably assumed that she would relish tormenting Dexter. This torture would likely be drawn out, ending only when Dexter pleads for his life. If Annie is in a particularly cruel mood, she might even immobilize Dexter, just as she did to Paul Sheldon in ‘Misery’.
3) Jigsaw – Saw
John Kramer, also known as the notorious Jigsaw Killer, employs intricate deadly puzzles to chastise individuals he deems morally corrupt. Similar to character John Doe, Jigsaw himself does not engage in direct killing but rather allows his traps to carry out the grisly tasks. Unlike the villain from Se7en, however, he portrays these challenges as “games” and often offers his victims the opportunity for freedom if they comply with detailed guidelines that often entail self-inflicted pain.
Jigsaw relies on various associates to execute his “games,” casting uncertainty over whether Dexter could ever capture the man directly. It’s likely that Dexter could eliminate one of Jigsaw’s apprentices, such as Amanda or Doctor Gordon, but he would eventually find himself ensnared in one of Kramer’s traps. Whether he would perish in those traps is a completely different question.
It’s likely that Dexter would have the intelligence to get out of a Jigsaw trap, but only if he didn’t violate one of his father’s rules during the process. If by some chance he did manage to overcome the trap, there’s a catch: Jigsaw is known for having backup plans within his traps, so it’s possible that Dexter would just end up in another one. Even if he escaped once, there’s no guarantee he’d be able to do it again, given that Jigsaw’s traps are complex and often have multiple layers of security.
Another possibility could be that Dexter might end up as a follower of John Kramer, which we’d still view as a victory for Jigsaw. Regardless of the outcome, it seems that Jigsaw is already winning in this scenario.
4) Hannibal Lecter – The Silence of the Lambs
Acknowledge it, deep down, you sensed this outcome was inevitable. While Dexter is undeniably a well-known fictional murderer, Hannibal Lecter surpasses him in many aspects. Lecter is not just a criminal genius, he’s also an expert in forensic psychiatry, the arts, and various intellectual fields. Essentially, Hannibal Lecter operates on a league of his own compared to Dexter.
Hannibal Lecter is celebrated for his unique skill in understanding and analyzing other serial killers, including their methods of operation. One might speculate that Lecter could swiftly penetrate Dexter’s mind, leveraging his traumas against him. Be it Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelson, or even Brian Cox (who debuted the role in Michael Mann’s Manhunter) – Hannibal Lecter possesses the acumen to outmaneuver Dexter Morgan and bring the Bay Harbor Butcher to a permanent end.
