Season 2 of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is here, and it’s a great time to start watching this spin-off series! With the main My Hero Academia show recently concluding, Vigilantes offers a way to continue enjoying that universe. While it’s a prequel, understanding the story of Izuku Midoriya from the original series will enhance your experience, as there are many references and appearances throughout Vigilantes. The series features new heroes with different approaches, but it maintains the familiar world fans love. You might even want to rewatch a few episodes of the original My Hero Academia before diving in to catch all the connections.
While My Hero Academia is great to rewatch, you don’t need to watch the entire series again before starting its prequel. Focusing on episodes that tie into characters and plot points from Vigilantes will give you helpful background information. I recommend revisiting these four episodes, as they’ll add extra context to events in Seasons 1 and 2. Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for characters who appear in Vigilantes, though it avoids revealing specific details.
4) “Time to Pick Some Names” (Season 2, Episode 13)

The My Hero Academia Season 2 episode, “Time to Pick Some Names,” mainly shows Class A students choosing their hero names. However, it also shares an update on a significant character from Vigilantes Season 1: Ingenium. Ingenium, the older brother of Tenya Ida and his hero role model, had his career cut short after a dangerous fight with the villain Stain. This episode reveals that he is now unable to use his legs. Vigilantes adds emotional depth to his retirement by showing his interactions with Koichi, and it highlights how his heroic legacy lives on through his brother, Ida. Viewers interested in fully understanding one of Ingenium’s key appearances might want to revisit this episode before continuing with Vigilantes.
3) “Hero Killer: Stain vs. U.A. Students” (Season 2, Episode 16)

I’m a huge fan of learning more about the characters, and the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes series actually gives us a look into Stain’s past! It’s so interesting to see where his extreme beliefs came from, even if he’s still very much the ‘Hero Killer’ we meet later on. Honestly, it took me a second to realize it was the same guy! If you’re curious, I highly recommend rewatching Season 2’s ‘Hero Killer: Stain vs. U.A. Students’ – it really ties everything together and reminds you what happens to him after Vigilantes. Plus, that arc is just fantastic on its own, and it gives us even more insight into Ingenium. It’s a really gripping rewatch, even if you’re not following the spinoff!
2) “Let’s Go, Gutsy Red Riot” (Season Season 4, Episode 4)

Season 2 of Vigilantes is already bringing in fun cameos, and the appearance of Fat Gum in the first episode will remind fans of My Hero Academia Season 4. Fat Gum supervised Kirishima’s internship in the episode “Let’s Go, Gutsy Red Riot,” which actually foreshadowed his role in Vigilantes. In that episode, Fat Gum discusses working with the police on drug-related cases—the same thing he’s doing in Vigilantes. And “Let’s Go, Gutsy Red Riot” features Fat Gum and his interns pursuing a villain using a drug that boosts Quirks, hinting at possible links to Koichi’s story.
1) “More of a Hero Than Anyone” (Season 5, Episode 19)

As a huge My Hero Academia fan, I’m so excited for Vigilantes Season 2! The trailer hints we’ll be diving into the backstory of Eraser Head and Present Mic, and even more importantly, learning more about Oboro Shirakumo – the inspiration for Kurogiri. Knowing what happens later in the series, this is going to be heartbreaking. If you haven’t already, definitely watch Season 5, Episode 16 (“More of a Hero Than Anyone”) before Season 2 drops – it gives you all the context you need, and honestly, it’ll make the prequel story even more impactful and emotional.
Okay, so I’m getting ready to dive into Vigilantes, and I’m wondering what episodes I should revisit first to get fully prepped! I’d love to hear your recommendations – let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
