If you’re a fan of the show Outlander, you’ve probably heard of “Droughtlander” – that’s what fans call the long wait between seasons. This time, the wait has felt particularly long, as the last season ended over a year ago. Luckily, the final season is almost here, which is both exciting and nerve-wracking for fans! While we wait, many are rewatching old episodes or looking for new shows with a similar feel, but it’s hard to find something that captures the same magic. Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon’s books, uniquely combines sweeping romance, political intrigue, drama, historical conflicts, time travel, complex characters, and high-stakes decisions.
As a huge Outlander fan, I’m always looking for shows with that same captivating storytelling! Luckily, there are still some out there – they’re not trying to be Outlander, but they definitely have that same magic. While we eagerly await the final season, I’ve found 4 series that I think fellow fans will really enjoy.
4) A Discovery of Witches

The heart of Outlander has always been the passionate love story between Claire and Jamie, though their path hasn’t been simple. A Discovery of Witches also features a complex romance, but this one centers on a couple fighting against societal expectations and prejudice. The series follows Diana Bishop, a historian who initially shies away from her magical heritage, until a strange manuscript draws her into a supernatural battle. Amidst this conflict, she falls in love with vampire Matthew Clairmont, and their relationship becomes a challenge with consequences that extend beyond just the two of them.
As a total cinema devotee, I’m always a bit frustrated when a show like A Discovery of Witches doesn’t get the recognition it deserves! It’s seriously good, and packed with tension. Watching Diana and Matthew navigate their relationship reminded me a lot of Outlander – they’re constantly battling tradition, prejudice, and powerful forces trying to keep them apart. The show understands that a love story like theirs needs that constant threat to feel real. But it’s so much more than just a romance, too. It beautifully blends in political intrigue between different species, explores themes of identity and legacy, and builds a really rich mythology. Oh, and there’s even time travel thrown in for good measure! It’s a perfect mix of romance, fantasy, mystery, and world-building.
3) Reign

If you enjoy historical dramas like Outlander, you’ve probably come across Reign. The show is loosely based on the life of Mary Stuart, a young queen navigating the complexities of the French court. From the beginning, she faces political maneuvering, growing conflicts, and passionate relationships that could impact her reign. While it’s a story about power, it really focuses on how love and personal connections can disrupt even the most established systems – particularly during that time period. It’s worth noting that Reign takes significant creative license with history, adding fictional characters, altering events, and amplifying the drama to enhance the romance and political storylines. The show prioritizes entertainment above all else.
While Reign is a different story, it will appeal to Outlander fans because it keeps the action moving quickly. Expect plenty of surprises, shifting alliances, and complicated relationships where characters are constantly torn between what they want and what they have to do. It mirrors the difficult choices Claire and Jamie face – safety versus loyalty, or duty versus personal happiness. If you enjoy that intense, high-stakes drama, Reign is a great choice for your next binge-watch.
2) Poldark

Although it doesn’t get mentioned as often, Poldark is perhaps the closest show in spirit to Outlander, capturing a similar captivating energy. The series centers on Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), who returns home after the American Revolutionary War to a drastically altered life – his beloved is now engaged to another man. The story follows his efforts to regain his position in society and his developing, initially improbable, but ultimately central relationship with Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson).
Both Outlander and Poldark stand out because they portray conflicts realistically, without glossing over the hardships. These shows focus on couples who evolve together, characters who are flawed and make mistakes, and marriages tested by significant challenges. The class differences depicted feel genuine and have lasting consequences, creating compelling drama. It’s a strong love story, but one that’s never simple. Plus, the characters are consistently well-developed and complex throughout the series. For fans of Outlander, this show is a real gem waiting to be found.
1) Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Perhaps the most anticipated addition to the Outlander world is Blood of My Blood, a series that delves into the love stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents. The story unfolds across two time periods – 18th-century Scotland and World War I – following Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, as well as Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp. This new series doesn’t just offer romantic storylines; it enriches the history of the original show, adding depth to its characters and overall narrative.
With the first season complete and another one on the way, now is the ideal time to start watching Outlander: Blood of My Blood if you haven’t already. This isn’t just extra material – it adds important background and depth to the story, and author Diana Gabaldon’s involvement makes it especially meaningful. The plot strengthens what fans loved about Outlander from the beginning, and even without Claire and Jamie, it feels comfortably familiar. It’s an easy addition for longtime viewers, builds on your existing emotional connection to the series, and will keep you engaged while you wait for the final season.
