We’ve seen a lot of game releases pushed back this year, which is always a letdown. However, it’s even more disappointing when games are cancelled completely. Several highly anticipated titles planned for 2025 were unfortunately scrapped for various reasons. Many of these games were announced a long time ago, and fans had been eagerly awaiting them, but sadly, not all projects make it to release.
Many games faced delays or were cancelled this year, which is disappointing for everyone involved – especially the teams who worked hard on them. Some of these cancelled games had a lot of potential and could have been fantastic. Here are four that stood out as particularly promising.
4) Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link

The mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing Link was announced in 2022 and development seemed to be progressing well. However, it was delayed just before its planned 2024 release. This year, Square Enix confirmed fans’ worries by officially cancelling the game. Since the game was close to launch, we got a good look at it through leaks and official videos, and it actually looked quite promising.
The early test version of Missing Link received a lot of different opinions. However, I think a Pokemon Golike game based in the Kingdom Hearts* world is a great idea. Even though Square Enix hasn’t always supported its mobile games well, I believe this one could have been successful, and it’s disappointing that it was cancelled so near completion.
3) ZeniMax’s Unnamed Sci-Fi MMO

Rumors started in July that Microsoft cancelled several Xbox games, including a massive online multiplayer game (MMO) being developed by ZeniMax, the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online. This project, known internally as Blackbird, had been in development since 2018. A report from TrueAchievements described it as a unique combination of games like Destiny, Blade Runner, and Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s frustrating to think about how great this game could have been!
With the continued success of The Elder Scrolls Online, ZeniMax has proven they understand what makes a good online game. However, their canceled project, Project Blackbird, wouldn’t have benefited from an established name. It was planned to be a science fiction action-RPG with a unique “alien noir” style. While many MMOs exist, most focus on fantasy worlds, making this sci-fi approach stand out. This difference could have given Project Blackbird a competitive advantage and potentially made it a hit. Unfortunately, the game never came to fruition.
2) Everwild
The game Everwild was recently cancelled as part of a restructuring at Xbox Games. Developed by Rare, the team behind Sea of Thieves, Everwild was first announced in 2019 as a third-person action adventure game that would have focused more on exploration and art than combat. We saw previews of the game’s promising art style as recently as December 2024.
I was really excited about Everwild when it was first announced. While they didn’t share a ton of details, what we did see looked amazing. It was shaping up to be a world with its own unique story and cool creatures, and it hinted at a really interesting connection between players and those creatures. We even got a trailer, so we had a pretty good idea of what the game could have been. Honestly, it felt like it could’ve been a gorgeous new fantasy world to get lost in – something totally fresh. And in a gaming landscape filled with sequels and remakes, that would have been incredible, especially coming from a developer known for making great games.
1) Wonder Woman

I often think about the cancelled Wonder Woman game, which was announced in 2021. It was being developed by Mnolith Productions, the studio behind the excellent Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel. Unfortunately, WB Games restructured and closed Mnolith in February 2025, and the Wonder Woman project was cancelled as a result.
We only saw a tiny glimpse of a potential Wonder Woman game, and it’s a shame it never materialized. After the disappointing Catwoman game on PS2, we haven’t had a big, female-led superhero game since. Considering how well the Wonder Woman movie did, she would have been a perfect fit. Her fighting skills and iconic weapons, like the Lasso of Truth, could have created a really fun and unique gameplay experience, and it’s disappointing we’ll never get to play it.
