The Devil May Cry series is renowned for its fashionable, thrilling action that encourages combinations and risk-taking. Dante, the main character, exhibits an extravagant charm as he embraces the dramatic elements of the character action genre. Devil May Cry established the benchmark for this genre, and it has served as a beacon for fans seeking combat with a perfect blend of showmanship and technique. However, there are other games that also excel in providing high-adrenaline, exhilarating challenges with panache.
The Devil May Cry series is famous for its stylish, energetic gameplay that rewards combinations and experimentation. The lead character Dante is flamboyant and captivating, embodying the flashy traits of the character action genre. The series set a standard in this genre and has been cherished by fans who yearn for combat with a balance between spectacle and skill. But Devil May Cry isn’t alone in standing out for offering high-octane challenges and pizzazz.
Over time, the character action genre has evolved past simple hack-and-slash games, with developers introducing new elements to the formula. Some developers have stuck to the style of the Devil May Cry series, while others have added innovative twists to fast-paced action. This includes increasing the challenge level, incorporating compelling storylines, and other enhancements. Four games are just as impressive as Devil May Cry and can be considered among the top character action games in the genre, sharing the spotlight with it.
1) Bayonetta 2

In a nutshell, if there’s a game that could be considered a worthy competitor to Devil May Cry, it’s Bayonetta 2. Notably, Hideki Kamiya, who was part of the initial creation team for Devil May Cry, served as the director for this series. The original Bayonetta already amped up what fans loved about Dante’s adventures, and the sequel built upon that foundation with refined combat, even more over-the-top action sequences, and a captivating storyline, which is arguably the best in the series.
In simpler terms, Bayonetta, the main character who’s a witch in the game, shares similarities with Dante. Her charm, along with her weapons and powers, form an essential part of her fighting style. Playing as Bayonetta requires skill, imagination, and timing. This results in an extravagant action system that mirrors that of the _Devil May Cry_ series. Trying out different weapons and combinations is a thrilling and exhilarating experience. It’s evident that Kamiya’s influence can be seen in both series.
2) NieR: Automata

Upon initial observation, it might not be immediately apparent that Devil May Cry and NieR: Automata share many similarities. However, once the intense action commences and the captivating soundtrack begins to play, those similarities become evident. Platinum Games has ingeniously blended fast-paced hack-and-slash mechanics with bullet-hell elements, resulting in a truly distinctive gaming experience. Furthermore, Yoko Taro’s creation of the iconic character 2B is one that continues to stand out as one of the most memorable characters within the gaming world.
2B’s combat style seamlessly combines acrobatic close-quarters attacks and long-range assaults, resulting in a harmonious yet powerful dance of destruction. Players have the option to change weapons during combos, adding another layer to their attacks. The inclusion of companions adds even more depth and variety to the gameplay experience. What sets NieR: Automata apart from other action games, such as Devil May Cry, is not just its gameplay, but its compelling narrative. Yoko Taro has masterfully blended thrilling combat with an emotionally resonant story that becomes richer the more you delve into it.
3) Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Few games match the intense level found in the Devil May Cry series quite like the Ninja Gaiden series. The game Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, from Team Ninja’s collection, offers one of its most outstanding versions on modern gaming platforms. Known for its challenging difficulty and rapid-fire combat, Ninja Gaiden showcases a unique action style. While Devil May Cry emphasizes stylish improvisation, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black requires precise skill and commitment instead.
Ryu Hayabusa makes a comeback, bringing along a huge collection of katanas, scythes, and other combat tools that offer various strategies for battle. Each fight is intense and gratifying, testing your reflexes, timing, and skill mastery. Players are encouraged to hone their abilities as they learn the elegant action of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. The game’s level of difficulty can be intimidating, but overcoming it makes for a unique experience. With the arrival of Ninja Gaiden 4 just around the corner, now is the perfect moment to jump into this action-packed game.
4) Final Fantasy 16

In a significant shift away from its traditional JRPG foundation, the highly anticipated game, Final Fantasy 16, made its debut with flair. Sporting an action-RPG aesthetic and dynamic hack-and-slash combat, this switch wasn’t unexpected given Ryota Suzuki’s background in Devil May Cry V. In many ways, Final Fantasy 16 seems like a logical progression of the action style that the Devil May Cry series is known for, even though it may not reach the full complexity. However, its cinematic quality is certainly noteworthy.
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, Clive Rosfield’s combat skills are nothing short of jaw-dropping. It’s like watching a smooth dance where swords and magic, summoned through Eikons, take center stage. The real showstopper here is the Eikon-based combo system – it lets you switch abilities on the fly, creating an impressive display of stylish chained attacks.
The Eikon battles in Final Fantasy 16 are some of the most cinematic fights I’ve ever experienced in this genre, and they don’t disappoint when it comes to epic scale. While it’s all about fast-paced action, the game still manages to keep the essence of its series alive with a deep narrative that pulls you right into the heart of the story.
