Most Star Trek shows are available on Paramount+, meaning you need a subscription to watch them. While the movies have moved around different streaming services over the years, fans will be happy to hear that four Star Trek films – including two highly-rated ones – will be available to stream for free in June. The franchise began with The Original Series and was followed by Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. Since then, there have been six films featuring the original crew, four with the cast of The Next Generation, and three set in the Kelvin Timeline.
Good news for fans of the Next Generation Star Trek movies! All four films will be available to stream on Plex for free starting June 1st. That includes two fan favorites, Generations and First Contact.
Star Trek Movies Headed to Plex in June

In 1994, the Star Trek films transitioned from the original cast to the actors from The Next Generation with the release of Star Trek: Generations. Directed by David Carson and written by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, the film aimed to pass the torch, bringing together the casts of the original series (TOS) and The Next Generation (TNG) for a shared appearance featuring both Captain Kirk and Captain Picard. While reviews were mixed—receiving a 48% critic score and a 57% audience score—and some fans reacted negatively to Kirk’s death, the movie was a financial success and launched a new era of Star Trek films.
That success paved the way for what many consider the best of the Next Generation films: Star Trek: First Contact. This movie directly continued storylines from the TV show and featured the crew traveling back in time to prevent the Borg – still one of the most iconic Star Trek villains – from succeeding. It was a significant improvement over Generations, earning high praise from both critics and fans, with a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% audience score.
Okay, so the Next Generation movies weren’t all hits. After Generations, Insurrection got pretty similar reviews, but audiences liked it even less – it only scored 44%. Then Nemesis really struggled; it actually lost money at the box office, earning just $67.3 million with a $60 million budget. Plus, it got the worst reviews of any Star Trek film up to that point – around 37-49% positive. That pretty much ended the movie series until J.J. Abrams came along and rebooted everything. But the good news is, if you’re a fan like me and want to watch all the *TNGera films, they’re going to be available on Plex for free, which is awesome!
