Leading the Metroid franchise since its inception in 1986, Samus Aran is the subject of one of the most well-known surprise endings in video gaming. The reveal of her gender at the conclusion of the original game was a landmark moment in the medium, paving the way for other female protagonists afterward, and each subsequent Metroid game revealed more about her character and backstory, little by little.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always been captivated by the unique charm of Metroid, though it doesn’t quite match the global fame of Nintendo icons like Mario and Zelda. However, Samus Aran’s presence in the Super Smash Bros. series has certainly broadened her reach beyond just gaming circles. Despite her popularity, there are some intriguing tidbits about Samus that even the most ardent Metroid enthusiasts might not be aware of.
1) Samus Was Almost In Fortnite

In Fortnite, when Sony’s Kratos from PlayStation and Microsoft’s Master Chief from Xbox entered the battle royale, fans anticipated seeing Nintendo’s Samus Aran join the fray too. However, according to rumors, a Samus character skin for Epic Games’ free-to-play game was planned, but unfortunately, it never came to be.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the untold story of why Nintendo characters didn’t join our favorite game. According to Donald Mustard, former chief creative officer at Epic Games (as reported by IGN), it all boiled down to a significant disagreement-Nintendo wanted their beloved characters to appear exclusively on Nintendo platforms, while Epic Games aimed to keep the game universal, without restricting characters based on platform. It’s a pity that this potential collaboration never came to fruition. One can only speculate how Samus would handle an assault rifle alongside her renowned arm cannon!
2) Samus Makes A Cameo In A Dead Or Alive Game
Samus Aran, a character well-known from various video games, has occasionally appeared in different titles throughout the years. For instance, she made a short appearance in Super Mario RPG, where she was taking a break before facing Mother Brain. Similarly, mature games like Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame IV offer Samus-inspired outfits for their main characters. However, one of her most peculiar appearances occurred in the 2011 game Dead or Alive: Dimensions on the Nintendo 3DS.
The Team Ninja, known for their significant contributions to the Metroid series, particularly with the game Metroid: Other M, maintains a strong connection to it. In Dead or Alive: Dimensions, one stage is modeled after the Geothermal Power Plant section from Other M and features the notorious Metroid villain Ridley causing chaos, posing threats to players. Although Samus Aran isn’t playable in her entirety in Dead or Alive: Dimensions, she appears as a Morph Ball to vanquish the troublesome Space Pirate Ridley using a Power Bomb.
3) Brie Larson Wants To Portray Samus In Film

Brie Larson, the celebrated Academy Award winner known for her role in Captain Marvel, is aiming to portray another fierce space-traveling character from the Metroid series in an upcoming film. Larson has openly admitted her fondness for the series, particularly because of Samus as its main character. In earlier years, she even donned a Zero Suit Samus costume for Halloween. On social media, she’s explicitly stated her desire to bring a Metroid movie to life.
In 2021, Larson, a notable fan, posted an ad on Instagram for the game Metroid Dread, produced by Nintendo, where she shared her personal connection to the character Samus while playing the game on her Nintendo Switch OLED. Despite no official announcement of a Metroid movie, the successful release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (co-produced by Nintendo) and an upcoming Zelda movie could potentially pave the way for Larson’s involvement in a Metroid film in the future.
4) Samus’s Backstory And Her Parents’ Names

As a dedicated Metroid gamer, I can’t help but feel a deep connection with Samus Aran. You see, we both share a common origin – born and raised on a distant colony. But our lives took a drastic turn when Space Pirates, led by the terrifying Ridley, launched an attack that left me an orphan.
Luckily, I was taken in by the Chozo, those mysterious bird-like creatures. Under their guidance, I was molded into something extraordinary – a super soldier, surpassing human peak physical conditions. Later on, I served under General Adam Malkovich for the Galactic Federation, but my spirit of adventure and bounty hunting called me away from military service. Now, I’m known far and wide as a fearless hunter, ready to take on any threat in the universe.
Although ardent followers may not be well-versed in the details about her parents, given that the games themselves don’t delve into this aspect much. However, if you explore further into the Metroid manga, you’ll discover that her parents are Rodney and Virginia Aran. Diving even deeper into Metroid lore, you might stumble upon a story named “Blood of the Chozo,” published by Nintendo Power, which reveals her parents as Thea and Avram Aran, along with a younger brother named Solomon Aran. It’s worth noting that this particular story is considered non-canonical and hasn’t been referenced in subsequent media.
