4 Years Ago, The Best Time Travel Thriller Made a Shocking Debut

Anime shows that involve time travel or repeating time periods are rare, but they always grab viewers’ attention when they appear. The first episode is crucial – it needs to be exciting and mysterious enough to draw people into the story. It should hint at what’s to come without revealing everything at once. On April 15, 2022, Studio OLM released an anime adaptation of Summer Time Rendering, a series originally published on Shonen Jump+. The original manga, created by Yasuki Tanaka, ran from 2017 to 2021 and told a fantastic story.

With only 25 episodes, the anime adapts a manga that spans 139 chapters, but the short length of each manga chapter allowed the anime to cover the whole story. It moved quickly, with just a few minor changes from the original source material, keeping viewers engaged and eager to see what happens next. Even years after it first aired, the anime is still celebrated for its incredible opening episode, which features a shocking twist.

What Is Summer Time Rendering About?

Shinpei Ajiro comes back to his hometown, Hitogashima, from Tokyo for the funeral of his friend, Ushio Kofune. He grew up with Ushio and her sister after being orphaned and lived with their family. However, he moved away to start a new life. When he returns, he’s told Ushio died while rescuing a child, but Shinpei notices evidence suggesting she was actually strangled.

Shinpei investigates a series of strange events and discovers that the peaceful island is haunted by dangerous, supernatural entities called Shadows. These creatures secretly kill people and take their place. Shinpei also realizes he has a unique ability: whenever he dies, he can travel back in time and try to prevent the tragedy from happening again.

He has a unique power that lets him relive past events, helping him solve the mystery of the strange creatures and what really happened to Ushio. Each time he goes through the loop, he gets closer to understanding the truth behind her death and the Shadow’s ultimate plan. You can watch the anime on Hulu, and read the manga on the Manga Plus app.
