Four years ago today, we got Spider-Man: No Way Home, which quickly became the biggest Spider-Man movie ever. And let me tell you, it really shook things up for Peter Parker – more than anything we’d seen before. Thanks to the deal between Marvel and Sony, Tom Holland’s been our Spider-Man for nearly a decade now, and he’s set to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2026, marking a full ten years in the role! But his last outing in the MCU was a real gut punch – easily one of his most heartbreaking stories yet.
Released in the United States on December 17, 2021—exactly four years ago—Spider-Man: No Way Home became the highest-grossing live-action Spider-Man movie ever. Directed by Jon Watts, the film earned an impressive $1.921 billion worldwide. No Way Home concluded the “Home Trilogy,” finishing Tom Holland’s journey as Spider-Man and setting up major changes for the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will continue in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
How Spider-Man: No Way Home Changed Peter Parker in the MCU

Following the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Mysterio exposed Peter Parker as Spider-Man, Peter’s life was turned upside down. He and his friends, Ned and MJ, were rejected from MIT as a result. Desperate to fix things, Peter asked Doctor Strange to help everyone forget he was Spider-Man. However, the spell went awry, pulling characters from different universes into their world. Ultimately, Spider-Man managed to get Doctor Strange to correct the spell, causing everyone to forget who Peter Parker was.
In Marvel Comics, Spider-Man’s secret identity was publicly revealed during the 2006 storyline called Civil War, and a spell Doctor Strange used to make people forget he was Spider-Man originally appeared in a 2010 comic called One Moment in Time. This part of the story hasn’t been shown in a live-action Spider-Man movie before, giving Marvel Studios a chance to create fresh adventures for the character. Spider-Man: No Way Home made everyone—including Peter Parker’s friends like MJ, Ned Leeds, and Happy Hogan—forget who he was, leaving him completely isolated as he moves forward in the series.
Scheduled for release on July 31, 2026, the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will feature Spider-Man teaming up with the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to face a group of villains. The movie will explore a unique situation: everyone knows Spider-Man, but nobody knows Peter Parker, forcing Spider-Man to essentially rebuild his identity. Fans are excited to see Tom Holland return as a more experienced, tougher, and wiser Spider-Man.
