Daredevil’s story took a significant turn forty years ago when a crucial piece of his past was finally revealed. Created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, Daredevil first appeared in 1964 as a New York City lawyer, Matt Murdock, who secretly fought crime as a vigilante. He quickly became known as the protector of his neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen. But it wasn’t until issue #230 that readers learned the full story behind his origins.
The second part of the famous “Born Again” story arc for Daredevil came out on January 28, 1986. This issue was the first to reveal Matt Murdock’s childhood and that he grew up in Hell’s Kitchen.
Daredevil Reveals His Home for the First Time

Many fans consider “Born Again” to be the best Daredevil story ever written, and it’s probably why the recent Disney+ series used that title. However, the show doesn’t follow the original comic book storyline. In the comics, created by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, Kingpin discovers Daredevil’s secret identity – that Matt Murdock is Daredevil – and systematically destroys Matt’s life, starting with manipulating Matt’s former girlfriend, Karen Page.
At a difficult point in his life, Daredevil returned to Hell’s Kitchen – a place deeply important to him. In Daredevil #330, readers learned for the first time that this was where Matt Murdock grew up. The issue revealed his father’s gym was located there, and Matt also encountered his mother, a nun who cared for him after an injury but initially kept her identity a secret. This issue firmly established Hell’s Kitchen as the place that shaped Matt into the man he became.
As a huge Daredevil fan, I always felt issue #227, ‘Born Again,’ was pivotal. It really showed Matt Murdock at his absolute lowest, hitting rock bottom. Finding Karen Page again, and her finally confessing her actions, was a turning point – they began a journey towards healing together. Though things ultimately didn’t end well for Karen, that issue was crucial in getting Daredevil back on his feet. It wasn’t just about personal redemption, though; it really emphasized his deep connection to Hell’s Kitchen and how much that neighborhood meant to him.
