40 Years Later, Studio Ghibli’s First Feature Film Returns With a New Release

Studio Ghibli is one of the most celebrated animation studios in Japan. Founded in 1985, Ghibli continues to be renowned for its stunning animation, compelling stories, and emotionally resonant films. Although now famous worldwide, the studio faced challenges early on, struggling to establish financial stability and gain acceptance for its distinctive artistic style. Their first film, Castle in the Sky, released in 1986, wasn’t an immediate hit. However, it gradually gained a dedicated following and is now considered a classic. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Isao Takahata, the film ultimately found box office success through multiple re-releases over the years.

The beloved film Castle in the Sky is praised for its imaginative world and story. A unique comic book adaptation was also created, using screenshots and stills from the movie alongside dialogue bubbles instead of new artwork. Originally released in four volumes and translated by 2003, Viz Media has announced a complete, single-volume edition will be available on July 28th, 2026. Fans can pre-order the book now on Amazon.

What Is Castle in the Sky About?

This film examines the dangers of technology when it’s separated from the natural world and used for selfish or violent purposes, ultimately posing a threat to people. It’s unique in its combination of exciting, imaginative steampunk adventures and a strong message against war. The story follows Pazu, a young engineer’s assistant, who discovers a strange girl named Sheeta falling from the sky.

A group of villains is pursuing her, desperate to steal the ancient amulet she wears, as it holds the power to destroy the world. Pazu unexpectedly becomes involved and begins a journey to find the legendary castle in the sky, which holds the key to understanding the entire conflict.

Castle in the Sky Is Returning to Theaters in August 2026

To celebrate the incredible popularity of Studio Ghibli films, GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment host a yearly festival in North America. This event lets fans enjoy these classic animated movies in theaters, often with bonus content, and available in both Japanese with subtitles and English-dubbed versions.
