This year marks the 40th anniversary of what many consider to be the best film in the Friday the 13th series, and it continues to stand out even after all these years. While fans still debate which of the 12 movies is the greatest, with The Final Chapter often cited as the best, the sixth installment is truly superior.
Now celebrating its 40th year, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is widely considered the strongest film in the Friday the 13th series. It successfully rebooted the franchise by bringing Jason back to life – a first for the films – and established the tone and direction for future installments.
Jason Lives Saw The Birth Of Jason’s Most Iconic Form
The Beginning Of Zombie Jason
What makes Jason Lives stand out is how it firmly established Jason as the series’ iconic killer. While films 2 through 4 showed him as a powerfully strong man hunting counselors, after he seemingly died in The Final Chapter, the franchise initially decided to keep him dead, as evidenced by A New Beginning the next year.
Everything shifted with Jason Lives. The movie draws heavily from Frankenstein, as Tommy Jarvis—the character who originally defeated Jason—accidentally revives him with a lightning strike. This is where Jason truly becomes a relentless zombie, and it’s arguably the most effective and memorable version of the character.
C.J. Graham delivers a chilling performance as Jason, perfectly capturing his brutal and relentless nature. He effortlessly commits horrific acts of violence, like tearing limbs off and inflicting fatal injuries. What’s truly terrifying is that nothing seems to stop him – not even bullets or attempts to drown him. He’s a truly unstoppable force.
Jason Lives Actually Adds Stakes With A Full Campsite
Camp Crystal Lake Is Open For Business
Throughout the Friday the 13th series, the campgrounds are consistently closed before Jason and his mother begin their attacks. While The Final Chapter introduced Tommy Jarvis to raise the tension, the films never really show what a truly dangerous campground situation would be like.
Unlike other films in the series, Jason Lives starts with the arrival of summer camp counselors. The scene of a bus full of kids arriving immediately signals that this movie will be a departure from what audiences have seen before.
Throughout the movie, children repeatedly spot Jason and attempt to alert the counselors, but their warnings are ignored. A particularly chilling scene shows Jason confronting a terrified young girl who desperately prays for him to leave. While putting children in danger is a bold move for this film, it ultimately proves very effective and impactful.
Part VI’s Humor Makes It Stand Out From Other Friday The 13th Films
The Funniest Friday The 13th
What really makes this movie successful is its humor. While the Friday the 13th series has occasionally included lighter scenes, Jason Lives fully embraces comedy, giving it a unique and distinct style.
Though still a horror movie at its core, director Tom McLoughlin brilliantly leans into the franchise’s inherent silliness. It’s packed with memorable one-liners, clever editing choices, and disposable characters created purely for comedic effect. The result is a genuinely funny film that really stands out.
Jason Lives is unique within the Friday the 13th series. It marks the moment Jason Voorhees truly became the iconic slasher villain he’s known as today, and it delivers both high stakes and genuinely funny moments. Many fans consider Part VI the best film in the entire franchise, and it’s credited with revitalizing the series after 40 years.
