46 best Christmas films to stream this holiday season

Okay, so Christmas is coming fast, and honestly, nothing gets me more excited than a great holiday movie! I’ve probably already watched my usual favorites a couple of times, but I’m always looking for something new. And this year, 2025, all the streaming services are absolutely packed with Christmas films – it’s a movie buff’s dream!

Every year, Netflix offers a wide variety of movies, ranging from fun, lighthearted romantic comedies like The Holiday and Love Actually to critically acclaimed films such as Klaus.

Disney+ probably has the best selection of classic Christmas movies, including favorites like Home Alone, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and both versions of Miracle on 34th Street.

Prime Video offers a great variety of content, from beloved classics like It’s a Wonderful Life to delightful, lesser-known films like Merry Little Batman.

23 best Christmas movies to watch on Netflix

1) The Holdovers

The critically acclaimed film The Holdovers, which became available on the streaming service recently, was first released in the UK last year. It stars Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a grumpy teacher at a New England boarding school who is stuck on campus over Christmas break looking after the few students who couldn’t go home. He unexpectedly connects with a troubled but intelligent student and the school’s cook, a woman grieving the loss of her son in the Vietnam War.

This movie is both funny and deeply moving. While it has a slightly sadder tone than some typical Christmas films, it’s still a great choice for the holidays.

2) That Christmas

Richard Curtis, known for the beloved Christmas film Love Actually, also created a series of festive children’s books. Now, those books have been adapted into a new animated movie available on Netflix.

Like the movie Love Actually, this film weaves together the stories of different families and friends as they prepare for Christmas. It features a fantastic cast of British actors and is much more family-friendly than the director’s previous work – it’s a heartwarming and delightful story everyone can enjoy.

3) Nativity!

The 2009 movie kicked off a popular series – three sequels have been released in the last decade, each adding a new well-known actor to the cast. Currently, only the original film is available on Netflix, where Martin Freeman plays Paul Maddens, a primary school teacher in charge of the school’s yearly Nativity play.

This lively movie is great for kids, and the young actors are just as impressive as the well-known stars.

4) Jingle Bell Heist

The new 2025 holiday film stars Connor Swindells and Olivia Holt as Nick and Sophia, two people down on their luck who decide to rob a London department store on Christmas Eve. As they try to pull off the heist and get back at the store owner, a romantic connection might also develop.

5) Hot Frosty

Hot Frosty is likely one of the best holiday originals Netflix released in 2024. It stars Lacey Chabert, known from Hallmark movies, as a woman who recently lost her husband and unexpectedly falls in love with a charming snowman who comes to life through magic.

It’s delightfully goofy and surprisingly heartwarming! While it uses familiar Christmas movie clichés, a talented cast and clever humor help it rise above the rest.

6) Last Christmas

This charming Christmas romantic comedy, penned by Emma Thompson and directed by Paul Feig, is named after the famous Wham! song and includes a soundtrack filled with George Michael’s greatest hits.

Okay, so it’s not a cinematic masterpiece, but I genuinely enjoy this movie! It’s about a woman working at a Christmas shop who meets a guy who seems almost too perfect, and yeah, it’s definitely got some predictable moments and a twist that people weren’t crazy about when it first came out. But honestly, if you just want something lighthearted and festive to watch with a cozy drink, it’s perfect! It’s pure, cheesy Christmas fun.

7) Violent Night

Okay, so picture this: it’s like if ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Home Alone’ had a baby, and that baby was a Christmas movie! David Harbour, who you probably know from ‘Stranger Things,’ plays Santa – but he’s a bit rough around the edges, let’s just say. He’s lost his Christmas spirit, and when a group of bad guys ruins a rich family’s holiday, he has to get his act together and save the day. It’s seriously wild and funny!

The movie that follows is a wildly funny and violent ride that won’t appeal to everyone, but Carey Harbour’s energetic and surprisingly sweet performance holds it all together and delivers consistent laughs.

8) Our Little Secret

I really enjoyed Lindsay Lohan’s latest Netflix holiday movie! It felt a bit more realistic than ‘Falling for Christmas.’ She plays Avery, and the story is about her unexpectedly having to live with her ex, Logan (played by Ian Harding), after years of being apart. It’s a fun premise!

It’s pretty wild – both Avery and Logan have moved on and are dating new people, but get this – those new people are siblings! That makes for a seriously awkward holiday season where we’re both doing everything we can to hide our past from our new extended family. Honestly, the whole situation is a little over the top, but it leads to some genuinely funny moments, and it’s definitely better than a lot of the other holiday movies you find streaming.

9) Klaus

Klaus, Netflix’s first original film to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, offers a fresh and delightful take on the Santa Claus legend. Featuring a fantastic voice cast – including JK Simmons as Santa, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, and Joan Cusack – this heartwarming film tells a charming story of how Santa Claus might have begun.

Schwartzman stars as Jesper, a clumsy student who’s sent to the dreary, self-centered town of Smeerensburg as a punishment for being the Academy’s worst performer. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Klaus, a gifted but withdrawn toymaker.

10) The Christmas Chronicles

Many actors have played Santa Claus memorably, including Richard Attenborough and Tim Allen. But casting Kurt Russell as Santa – with Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus – was a particularly brilliant idea for this 2018 Netflix family movie.

The movie centers around two siblings who try to film Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, but their plan goes wrong. They end up teaming up with Santa and his elves to rescue Christmas. A sequel released in 2020 is also enjoyable.

11) Robin Robin

Aardman Animations is famous for Wallace & Gromit, but for a holiday treat, don’t miss their 2021 short film, Robin Robin. It’s a charming stop-motion story about a little bird trying to pull off a robbery.

This charming story follows a robin who was raised by a family of mice. She’s just realized she doesn’t quite fit in, so she embarks on a brave quest to steal a star and show everyone she can be a good mouse, just like them. The film features a fantastic cast, including Richard E. Grant, Gillian Anderson, and Adeel Akhtar.

12) Single All the Way

Christmas movies often follow predictable storylines and don’t offer much variety. However, this new film on Netflix aims to change that by providing much-needed representation – it’s the streaming service’s first romantic comedy centered around a gay couple during the holidays.

In the holiday rom-com Single All the Way, Peter (Michael Urie) intends to introduce his boyfriend to his family for Christmas, but his plans are thrown into chaos when he finds out his new love is already married to someone else.

When Peter asks his close friend Nick to join him for something, his family starts scheming to turn their friendship into a romance. As with any classic love story, Peter and Nick are then left wondering about their feelings and what their connection truly means.

13) Falling for Christmas

Lindsay Lohan is back in the new movie, Falling for Christmas, playing Sierra Belmont, a wealthy woman who gets into a skiing accident just before her wedding and the holidays.

When she wakes up with amnesia, she’s taken in by Jake (Chord Overstreet), a charming cabin owner, and his daughter. Expect a classic will-they-or-won’t-they romance and plenty of sweet, feel-good moments.

Although the story is unusual, the film delivers exactly what many people look for in a holiday movie: it’s relaxing, gently funny, and unfolds in a way you can easily anticipate.

14) Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey

If you enjoy cheerful musicals with a meaningful story, this 2020 film is a great choice.

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey tells the story of Jeronicus Jangle, a wonderfully quirky inventor who falls into sadness after a difficult loss. 15) Love Hard

Look, as a total movie fanatic, I’ve always thought romcoms and Christmas just go together. This one, a Netflix release from 2021, totally nails that vibe. It stars Nina Dobrev – you might know her from The Vampire Diaries – and it’s really fun because it takes all the classic romcom tropes and flips them on their head with a really fresh, modern take.

An LA writer’s new romance hits a major snag when she discovers she’s been catfished. After falling for someone online and traveling 3,000 miles to surprise him for the holidays, Natalie (Dobrev) realizes the person she thought she knew isn’t who they claimed to be, leaving her heartbroken and questioning everything.

Natalie quickly discovers she’s been tricked in an online romance by Josh (Jimmy O Yang), her dream guy’s childhood friend, who is also struggling to find love. The movie is a funny and charming romantic comedy that follows Natalie’s often-unsuccessful journey to find a relationship.

16) The Noel Diary

The most enjoyable Christmas movies often take unexpected turns, and ‘The Noel Diary’ is no exception. It tells the story of Jacob Turner, a successful author played by Justin Hartley, who goes back home for the holidays to deal with his recently deceased mother’s belongings.

So, instead of finding what he was looking for, my guy stumbles upon this old diary. Turns out it’s packed with secrets, not just about history, but also about this really fascinating woman named Rachel (played by Barrett Doss) who’s got her own agenda. They end up teaming up, and honestly, it sends them on this wild ride where they’re forced to deal with everything they’ve been running from, and the future they find is something neither of them saw coming.

17) The Princess Switch

No list of great Netflix Christmas movies is complete without including The Princess Switch. Now three films in, the series continues to delight audiences with its charm and offers a wonderfully fun escape from reality.

The idea behind the story is straightforward: a royal duchess and an everyday woman who look identical decide to swap lives. The first movie centers on Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro, and Stacy, a woman from Chicago, who make this switch just before Christmas. Despite being a simple concept, it’s still a captivating story to watch.

Thanks to a little holiday magic, Margaret finds romance with Stacy’s attractive colleague, while Stacy unexpectedly falls for Margaret’s fiancé, a charming prince.

The other two films offer royal successions, heartwarming romance, and plenty of entertainment – making the whole series a fantastic choice for a Christmas movie marathon.

The movie centers on Lisa (Christina Moore) and her boyfriend, Tom (John Ducey), who have been happily dating for five months. Their relationship hits a snag when Lisa discovers Tom has a strange obsession with a holiday she absolutely hates.

The big question of the film is, though: is it time to give Christmas another chance?

20) Scrooge: A Christmas Carol

Netflix recently created an animated adaptation of Charles Dickens’s ‘A Christmas Carol.’ This isn’t the first time the story has been reimagined – it’s been done with Muppets, as a silent film from 1901, and even as a computer-animated movie in 2009.

This new Netflix movie puts a fresh spin on the classic 1970 musical, featuring updated versions of the original songs.

The voice cast for this film is incredible! Luke Evans plays the adult Scrooge, and he’s joined by Olivia Colman as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Jessie Buckley as Isabel Fezziwig, and Johnny Flynn as Bob Cratchit.

The cast also includes Fra Fee as Harry Huffam, Giles Terera as Tom Jenkins, Trevor Dion Nicholas as ‘Present’, James Cosmo as Mr. Fezziwig, and Jonathan Pryce as Jacob Marley.

21) Holidate

This movie is pure holiday cheer! ‘Holidate’ is about two people who are tired of spending the holidays alone. They make a deal to be each other’s platonic dates for all the festive events, even though they’re both still single.

I’m totally hooked on this movie! It’s so fun watching these two characters go from just friends to realizing they have real feelings for each other. Plus, it’s got some steamy moments and a fantastic soundtrack – I’ve been humming the songs for days!

Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes lead the cast of ‘A Castle for Christmas,’ playing Sophie Brown and Duke Myles, respectively. Drew Barrymore also makes a brief appearance in the film.

This documentary offers a rare glimpse inside Allen’s dance school and, more importantly, sheds light on a dance career and style that often goes unnoticed.

1) Home Alone

Even three decades after it came out, Macaulay Culkin’s performance as Kevin McAllister in Home Alone is still considered one of the best by a child actor ever. The movie tells the story of eight-year-old Kevin, who is accidentally left home alone while his family goes on vacation. He spends Christmas Eve setting up elaborate traps to protect the house from two burglars (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

Over the years, several sequels to the movie have been made, and you can watch them all on Disney Plus. However, we think only the second film, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, is truly worth watching.

Though it first came out in July, this 1988 action movie has become a Christmas tradition for many people. Its story takes place on Christmas Eve, it features a cheerful soundtrack, and it includes a particularly memorable use of a Santa Claus ‘Ho Ho Ho!’

The film features Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York detective who unexpectedly battles a group of terrorists during his wife’s Christmas Eve party in Los Angeles. 3) The Muppet Christmas Carol

Many versions of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol have been made, but few are as popular as this charming adaptation featuring The Muppets. The story is told by Gonzo, playing Dickens, and Rizzo the Rat, and most of the Muppet characters have important roles. Michael Caine gives a fantastic performance as Ebenezer Scrooge, playing the character seriously even while acting alongside his Muppet co-stars.

This new and wonderfully energetic adaptation of the classic story, featuring fantastic original songs like “Thankful Heart” and “It Feels Like Christmas,” might just be the best movie version yet. It’s guaranteed to get you into the holiday spirit!

4) A Christmas Carol

If you’re not a fan of the Muppets (seriously?), this 2009 version of the story might be more your speed. Director Robert Zemeckis used the same motion-capture animation he famously used in The Polar Express, giving the film a distinctive and unusual look. It was originally intended to be viewed in 3D.

Jim Carrey plays not only Ebenezer Scrooge, but also all three ghosts who visit him. The film also features strong performances from Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, and Robin Wright. Whether you’ll enjoy it really depends on how impressed you are with the special effects, but the story is well-acted and stays true to the original.

5) The Nightmare Before Christmas

Every year, people debate whether Tim Burton and Henry Selick’s spooky animated movie is a Christmas film or a Halloween one. The best answer is probably that it successfully blends both holidays.

This stop-motion musical follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who’s grown tired of scaring people. When he discovers a doorway to Christmas Town, he becomes obsessed with bringing Christmas to his own world, even going so far as to kidnap Santa Claus. While the movie is full of Halloween imagery, it also includes plenty of Christmas elements, making it a fun choice for the holiday season.

Everyone knows Scrooge dislikes Christmas, but Dr. Seuss’s Grinch is a close second when it comes to famous holiday grumps. While a newer animated movie came out in 2018, the 2000 film with Jim Carrey is still considered the best and most memorable version.

The story centers on a grumpy character who tries to spoil Christmas for the cheerful people of Whoville, whom he dislikes. But he unexpectedly connects with a kind six-year-old girl named Cindy Lou (played by Taylor Momsen) who attempts to help him find the Christmas spirit.

Disney+ offers two versions of this beloved Christmas tale. The original, from 1947, stars Edmund Gwenn as Santa Claus. The popular 1994 remake features Richard Attenborough in the same role, alongside Mara Wilson, who many will recognize from the movie Matilda.

As a total movie buff, I always find it charming how both of these films are set in New York City and revolve around the same unbelievable situation: a department store Santa, who everyone thinks might actually be the real Santa Claus, ends up in court! It’s heartbreaking because a sweet little girl he’s become friends with is absolutely devastated by the doubt and the trial. It’s a really clever setup for some heartwarming drama.

While many movies have retold A Christmas Carol, the 2017 film is unique because it focuses on the story behind the story – how Charles Dickens actually came to write it. Starring Dan Stevens as Dickens, the movie shows the struggling author finding inspiration in Victorian London and his difficult personal experiences as he crafts the beloved tale.

The film isn’t a straightforward biography; it blends fantasy with reality by showing Dickens interacting with characters he’s creating, like Scrooge – played by Christopher Plummer – and even the ghosts from his stories.

8) Silent Night, Deadly Night

A remake of this classic 1980s horror film just came out, making now a great time to watch the original. The movie was very controversial when it was first released, telling the story of a young boy deeply traumatized after witnessing a man in a Santa suit violently kill his parents.

After a terrible event, he’s placed in an orphanage run by nuns, including a very harsh headmistress. More upsetting experiences around Christmas time deeply affect him, eventually driving him to dress as Santa Claus and commit violent acts. If you’re seeking a Christmas movie that’s far from cheerful and heartwarming, this might be it.

He plays Bill Furlong, a quiet and compassionate coal merchant in County Wexford, who is presented with a difficult decision before Christmas when he finds a troubled young girl hidden in a convent’s coal shed.

The movie feels reminiscent of a Dickens novel, and with its heartwarming themes of forgiveness, kindness, and the importance of family, set against a snowy landscape, it’s a perfect fit for the holiday season.

I absolutely love ‘A Christmas Story’! It’s so different from Bob Clark’s other holiday film, ‘Black Christmas’ – that one was a scary slasher!
