Since the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977, the franchise has become incredibly vast. Over the years, numerous sequels, prequels, and spin-off stories have expanded the Star Wars universe, answering almost any question a fan might have – we even know the story behind Han Solo’s last name! While a lot has been revealed over nearly 50 years, some mysteries still remain, and that’s sometimes a good thing. However, fans are curious about certain unanswered questions and would love to learn more.
Princess Leia’s story has been told in many different ways, not just through the Skywalker Saga films. She’s appeared in numerous novels, comics, and TV shows. We’ve seen her as a young girl needing help, like in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and as a seasoned general. But despite everything, fans have always hoped to see one particular thing hinted at back in Star Wars: A New Hope.
George Lucas Set Up a Princess Leia Prequel Early In A New Hope

The original Star Wars film, A New Hope, famously opens with the Empire capturing Princess Leia and her ship, the Tantive IV. Before the Imperials board, C-3PO tells R2-D2 that Leia won’t escape this time, hinting she’s pulled off daring escapes before. When the movie came out in 1977, this line was simply part of establishing the ongoing story, throwing viewers right into the middle of the action. At the time, audiences weren’t meant to overthink it – just to understand Leia had a history of fighting the Empire. But now, with the massive Star Wars universe that exists today, it’s hard not to wonder about those past adventures and near misses.
As a fan, I have to say, nothing else really compares to seeing Leia genuinely hunted by a Star Destroyer like in A New Hope. When she shows up in Obi-Wan Kenobi, she’s just a kid, and while the Inquisitors are after her, it’s to get to Obi-Wan, not because she’s leading a dangerous mission herself. And in Rebels, she helps the Ghost crew with a heist, which has some action, but she isn’t running for her life at the end. It’s also interesting to me that C-3PO wasn’t there for any of that, so he wouldn’t have known about it!
The way Threepio talks to R2-D2 hints that the two droids have experienced many dangerous situations we didn’t see on screen. While serving in the Imperial Senate, Leia quietly supported the Rebellion, and her father, Bail Organa, clearly trusted her with important missions – like delivering the Death Star plans to Obi-Wan. It’s likely Bail gave Leia similar, risky assignments before A New Hope, and that she often barely escaped dangerous situations as a result.
A line of dialogue from A New Hope hints at events that happened before the film begins. When Darth Vader confronts Leia aboard the Tantive IV, he states she wasn’t simply on a humanitarian mission, suggesting the Empire already knew about her and her work. They may have even suspected her involvement with the Rebel Alliance, but lacked solid evidence because she consistently covered her tracks by framing her activities as charitable endeavors.
Will We Ever See Leia’s Early Missions for the Rebellion?

Running with the stolen plans for the Death Star was incredibly risky, but Leia clearly undertook some major missions before the events of A New Hope. Otherwise, it’s hard to imagine Threepio comparing those earlier adventures to being chased by a Star Destroyer! If Leia was already facing such dangers, there’s a lot of potential for exciting new stories about her. As a popular and well-loved character, fans would be thrilled to learn more about her early life and how she became involved with the Rebellion, adding even more depth to her already compelling story.
It’s enjoyable to imagine the missions Leia undertook – maybe even secret operations to disrupt the Empire – but the more intriguing question is whether we’ll ever see what happened before the first Star Wars film. Sadly, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll ever get a look at Leia’s dangerous past on screen. Looking at Lucasfilm’s future plans, there doesn’t seem to be a natural place for a story about a young Leia. The studio is focusing on stories set outside the main conflict of the Galactic Civil War, and after Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn’t successful, Lucasfilm is probably hesitant to invest in a prequel focused on Leia.
There’s a good opportunity to showcase Leia’s earlier adventures. Because the Star Wars franchise exists across multiple formats – like books and comics – it’s possible to tell smaller, focused stories that wouldn’t necessarily warrant a full movie. A comic series exploring Leia’s time with the Rebellion before A New Hope could be really compelling, showing how her relationship with Bail Organa shaped her and revealing how she became such a brave and resolute leader. Even though she’s only 19 in A New Hope, Leia acts far older and always seems capable. That suggests she faced tough challenges that made her the fighter she is, and it would be fascinating to see those experiences explored.
