In essence, Super Mario is widely recognized as the pioneer of the 2D platforming genre, having launched it over four decades ago. Despite numerous new entrants, only a select few 2D platformers have managed to rival the quality of some top-tier Mario games. Presently, Mario stands as the icon for this genre, and rightfully so, given his extensive library of enjoyable games, some of which were released before many players were even born. Among all his adventures, these five stand out as the best.
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In the realm of Super Mario Bros. series, New Super Mario Bros. Wii makes a compelling case for the top power-up. The Propeller Mushroom, ingeniously designed by Nintendo, allows players to fly over obstacles, which can make certain game sections less challenging. However, it’s not always just about avoiding enemies; Nintendo masterfully balanced this by designing levels that necessitate flying, thus putting gamers in stressful flight situations where they must control their descent carefully. The boss fight and the false ending are equally brilliant, while the animation style fits perfectly (and looks superior to the DS games with the same style on a smaller screen), seamlessly transitioning from the style that was popular in the 1980s and 90s.
4. Super Mario Bros.
The classic version of Super Mario Bros., distinct from the arcade game featuring endless single-level runs where you can flip over Koopas, is exceptional. Many of its standout features can be found in this original release. The level designs, bosses, and other aspects are not only pioneering but also simply well-done. The first two levels are arguably among the most famous in video game history, and they continue to improve as you progress further. This version of Super Mario Bros. represents a timeless masterpiece by Nintendo that forever changed the gaming landscape.
3. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
As a dedicated Mario fan, I’ve got to say that Super Mario Bros. Wonder stands out from the crowd in a way none of the other games on this list do. It’s bursting with creativity – from the innovative power-ups to the mind-blowing level designs that keep things fresh and exciting. This game is a whirlwind of change, showcasing top-notch game development that leaves players in awe.
After a series of 2D Mario games that felt a bit stale, Wonder was like a breath of fresh air. Whatever Nintendo cooks up next needs to match or surpass this level of creativity, or it might feel like a major step back. The vibrant colors, unusual level layouts, and dynamic gameplay are elements that should become signature traits of the Mario series going forward.
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
It’s hard to deny that Super Mario Bros. 3 stands out as one of Mario’s most exceptional titles, both in 2D and beyond. This game is a true masterpiece that likely propelled the series to greatness. While earlier games were enjoyable, Super Mario Bros. 3 took things to another level with its impressive power-ups, captivating worlds, engaging boss battles, and iconic soundtrack. The multiplayer aspect could use some improvement (reflected in the era it was created), but everything else is nearly perfect. Furthermore, its length for a 2D platformer adds to its appeal because there’s simply so much fun to be had. With numerous worlds and various routes to explore within them, you can experience something new every time you play.
1. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is widely acknowledged as the outstanding 2D Mario game among numerous titles in the series. While levels and power-ups might sometimes be mistaken between New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, distinguishing anything from Yoshi’s Island is a breeze due to its unique charm, impressive music, robust level design, and numerous activities to engage in. It’s puzzling that it didn’t evolve into a separate spin-off series, possibly due to the unsuccessful DS title. It’s also perplexing that Nintendo didn’t continue these Mario-related platformers, given their success with this installment. Despite being 30 years old, it remains remarkably enjoyable even today.
