Most people immediately think of Steve Rogers when they hear “Captain America,” and for good reason. He’s been a Marvel hero since 1940, and Chris Evans’ popular portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made him even more iconic. But while Steve Rogers is the most famous Captain America, he isn’t the only one to hold the title. Several other heroes have served as Captain America, either directly taking on the role or creating their own unique version of the character.
Over the years, many characters in Marvel Comics have taken on the role of Captain America, or something very similar. While heroes like Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson are famous for being Captain America in the main Marvel universe, there are other, lesser-known versions that are also fantastic. Here are five of those heroes – Captain Americas from alternate timelines and realities who deserve recognition. We’re leaving Bucky and Sam off this list since their stories are already well-known. These characters might be new to you, and they’re definitely worth checking out.
5) CapWolf

As a huge Captain America fan, I always get a kick out of learning about alternate versions of the character. CapWolf is a particularly wild one! It’s actually the main Earth-616 Steve Rogers, but with a surprising twist. Back in 1992, in a story called “Man and Wolf,” Cap was investigating the disappearance of the hero Man-Wolf when he got captured by the villain Nightshade. Long story short, Cap ended up getting turned into a werewolf himself, and that’s how CapWolf was born! It’s a really fun, if unexpected, take on the character.
This storyline takes Captain America in a strange direction – though it fits with the style of writer Mark Gruenwald’s previous work on the comic. It’s definitely unusual, but also a lot of fun! The idea of Captain America as a werewolf is actually pretty awesome. The story brings together CapWolf with other werewolf characters like Man-Wolf, Wolfsbane, and Werewolf By Night to fight Nightshade, and that’s a truly fantastic team-up.
4) American Dream

While not a direct alternate version of Captain America, Shannon Carter – known as American Dream – was chosen by Captain America himself to wield the shield, so that settles it! First appearing in 1988’s A-Next #1, Shannon is Sharon Carter’s cousin and a lifelong Captain America fan. She joined a new Avengers team, adopting the identity American Dream and creating a costume inspired by Cap. After helping to rescue the original Avengers, she earned Captain America’s full support.
American Dream is a compelling character who embodies the inspiring legacy of Captain America while also standing out as a strong hero herself. Although she hasn’t been featured extensively in comics—with a solo series in 2008 and a recent appearance in Captain America Corps in 2011—she’s consistently proven her heroic abilities. Notably, she’s even led her own team, the Dream Team.
3) Soldier Supreme

Ever wondered what Captain America and Doctor Strange would be like combined? Meet Soldier Supreme, also known as Stephen Rogers. He first appeared in Infinity Wars #3 and is the result of a unique merging of universes. Soldier Supreme has Captain America’s strength and agility, combined with Doctor Strange’s powerful magic, making him a truly dangerous and impressive hero – he can even call upon magical spirits to help him!
What makes Soldier Supreme really stand out is his shield – it’s not like Captain America’s. This one is magical, which is pretty awesome! He also lives in his own separate dimension, outside of the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), and his story often mirrors Captain America’s, making it a really enjoyable read.
2) Captain Colonies

Stephen Rogers, known as Captain Colonies, comes from Earth-4103. In his reality, the original thirteen American colonies never broke away from England, which is why he’s connected to the Captain Britain Corps. Despite this different history, his costume is distinctly American, featuring stars, stripes, and an eagle.
Captain Colonies is a fascinating character, even though he hasn’t been featured prominently. He’s essentially the British equivalent of Captain America, which offers a fun twist on American history – a ‘what if’ scenario exploring an alternate version of the country. Plus, his three-cornered hat is a nice touch!
1) Captain Carter

Peggy Carter started as a popular character in Marvel comics, but her appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) really boosted her fame. This led to more stories about her in the comics, including the creation of Captain Carter. Captain Carter explores a different scenario – what if Peggy had received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers? Like Captain America, she has similar powers, but with a unique personality and background. She’s quickly become a beloved character among fans.
What makes Captain Carter stand out is that she’s become a truly unique character, more so than most other alternate versions of Captain America. She first appeared in the animated series What If…? and then had a memorable moment in the live-action film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is a significant achievement for an alternate version of such a popular hero, and fans have really embraced her.
