As a huge comic book fan, I’m always amazed by how consistently new stories hit the stands. Seriously, dozens come out every week, and the numbers just keep climbing monthly! DC Comics, especially, is constantly expanding its superhero universe with new titles. While they occasionally branch out, most of their releases stay focused on their main continuity. Just last May, they dropped forty-six new comics – thirty-four ongoing series and twelve limited runs! It really feels like a golden age for DC right now. Honestly, though, with so many great books coming out each month, it can be tough to figure out which ones are really worth my time and money.
That’s exactly what we’re here to address today. We’re going to look at the five best comics that DC released this month and rank them to explain exactly why these are the cream of the crop. Frankly, the majority of DC’s monthly library is definitely worth picking up at some point, so narrowing this list gets harder every month, but these books have risen to the top of the pile by the narrowest margins. Without further ado, let’s discuss the DC books that you need to read for May 2026.
5) Superman #38

Prime Time continues to be a hugely enjoyable comic, and this issue throws Prime into an epic battle with Witchfire. It’s a fantastic showcase of his incredible power and artist Dan Mora’s amazing talent. While this might be the slowest issue in the current storyline, it’s still a wildly fun read that explores what it means to be a character like Superboy-Prime within the DC Universe. It’s full of exciting action and lighthearted moments that recapture the joy of reading comics as a kid, all while building towards a truly intense final showdown over the next two issues.
4) Absolute Martian Manhunter #11

John Jones is facing a severe mental crisis, and things get even harder for his family as a major turning point approaches. This issue dives deep into the sadness that’s been building throughout the series, using its unique blend of philosophical dialogue and unusual artwork to make it truly special. The issue culminates in a shocking cliffhanger and twist that completely changes how we understand everything that’s happened so far. It’s a fantastic setup for the final issue, and I’m eagerly anticipating the conclusion.
3) Absolute Superman #19

The latest issue introduces King Shazam to the Absolute Universe, establishing him as a truly formidable villain – even more dangerous than anything we’ve faced so far. The battle between Superman and Black Adam is epic in scope, with consequences that threaten the entire world, but it still feels grounded in the emotions and motivations of the characters. Steel really shines in this issue; his reimagined origin story ties into the book’s central themes and offers a relatable perspective amidst a war between god-like beings. The artwork is stunning and perfectly captures the massive scale of the conflict, leaving me incredibly excited to see what happens next.
2) Absolute Batman #20

Following the shocking events and heartbreaking loss from the previous issue, this installment plunges Batman further into despair. Scarecrow is brilliantly terrifying, consistently stealing the spotlight with his portrayal. We see Batman stretched to his limit, struggling with the responsibility of protecting Gotham while simultaneously isolating himself. Just as he begins to fall apart, he’s confronted by the Absolute Robins, setting the stage for what promises to be his most devastating defeat yet. The story masterfully builds suspense through its visual storytelling, creating an incredibly tense and gripping experience.
1) Absolute Green Arrow #1

This thrilling murder mystery immediately grabs your attention with its intense violence and political themes. The story follows Dinah Lance, a former MMA fighter working as a bodyguard to pay for her father’s cancer treatment. When the Green Arrow enters the scene, things escalate quickly, blending brutal action with thought-provoking questions about justice and corruption. It explores the dark side of seeking justice when the wealthy hold all the power, and how easily anyone could cross the line. This fresh take on a classic hero sets up a captivating and disturbing mystery, and I’m excited to see where it goes.
