Many Dungeons & Dragons characters are built for close-up, hand-to-hand fighting, and several classes support that style. While melee combat isn’t as diverse as magic, there are still ways to create unique and effective fighters. By mastering the basics of close-range combat in this popular tabletop RPG, characters can become incredibly strong and deal massive damage, often becoming key players in their group.
Compared to spellcasters in Dungeons & Dragons, characters who fight up close have a limited range of abilities. Classes like Barbarians, Fighters, and Rogues represent these martial characters, and they make up for their simpler approach with special features. The most effective close-combat fighters are those who can attack more often, surpassing magical characters and increasing their chances of dealing significant damage to the most dangerous enemies, protecting their teammates in the process.
5. The Hexblade Warlock

The Hexblade is a very popular and strong Warlock option, especially for players who enjoy fighting up close. It combines magical power with physical combat skills. Unlike most Warlocks who rely on spells from a distance, the Hexblade can use protective magic like Shield and Blur, or powerful attacks like Wrathful Smite and Branding Smite, to enhance their fighting ability. This build also lets you use shields, weapons, and medium armor, something most Warlocks can’t do, and even provides a special weapon that stays with your character permanently.
The Hexblade’s greatest strength is its Hexblade’s Curse. Applying this curse to an enemy adds extra damage to your attacks and restores your health when you defeat it. Cursed enemies are also easier to hit with critical attacks, a significant advantage few other melee characters possess. Combined with features from the Pact of the Blade, the Hexblade can become incredibly powerful, with a curse that grows stronger over time, leading to unmatched close-combat ability.
4. Path of the Giant Barbarian

While many effective Barbarian builds focus on close-quarters combat, like the Totem Warrior, the Path of the Giant offers a unique advantage. This subclass lets your character grow to a Large size, making it difficult for enemies to control you with grappling or restraints during fights. Plus, you can add elemental damage to your attacks and even turn your weapon into a thrown weapon, overcoming enemy defenses in a new way.
This character build offers a lot of versatility in Dungeons & Dragons by giving your weapons extended reach and range, which is a common weakness for characters who fight primarily up close. The Path of the Giant Barbarian can also physically move enemies, potentially causing them to fall and take damage, depending on where you position them. As you level up and become even larger and have greater reach, you’ll always be able to attack enemies, no matter where they are, and handle any combat situation. Compared to other close-combat builds, the Giant Barbarian stands out by adding ranged options for greater flexibility.
3. Battle Master Fighter

Okay, so I’ve tried a bunch of melee builds for the Fighter class, and honestly, Battle Master just feels the strongest. There are some cool subclasses like Cavalier, Echo Knight, Rune Knight, and Psi Warrior, but none of them give you as many options as a Battle Master. What really sets it apart are the Maneuvers – think of them like a special fighting style that adds a ton of strategy to every fight. And the best part? They’re powered by Superiority Dice, which means almost every smart move you make also deals extra damage. It just feels really powerful and versatile!
As a player, I love the Battle Master Fighter because of how customizable it is. We get 23 different Maneuvers to choose from – basically, special moves that can buff almost anything about our character. Things like disarming opponents, goading them into mistakes, quickly assessing the battlefield, or a really solid parry… it feels like there’s always a good option. You start with three Maneuvers when you pick the class, and then you get two more at levels 7, 10, and 15, meaning by the end you have nine! Plus, we can really dig into learning enemy weaknesses, making the Battle Master consistently one of the strongest melee builds you can play.
2. Way of the Astral Self Monk

If you want a close-combat character who attacks frequently, the Astral Self Monk is a great choice. This Monk subclass lets you create spiritual arms by spending a ki point, which immediately damages enemies nearby. While these arms are active, you can use them to attack without weapons, and your attack and damage are based on your Wisdom stat instead of Strength or Dexterity.
As you repeatedly use your melee attacks, they gain increased range and eventually manifest as a powerful, spiritual energy surrounding your body, visually changing your arms. This build is incredibly strong and visually impressive, especially after reaching Level 17 and fully unlocking your spiritual form. A skilled Astral Self Monk can unleash up to six attacks in a single round, dealing massive damage to anyone who gets close – if played correctly in Dungeons & Dragons.
1. War Domain Cleric

As a fan, I love the War Cleric build! It’s all about being a powerful, divine warrior who gets right into the thick of things. From the start, you get spells that boost your fighting – things like Shield of Faith and Magic Weapon are super useful. As you level up, you gain both strong defensive and offensive magic, making you a really well-rounded fighter. Plus, you’re proficient with all kinds of weapons and heavy armor, so you can gear up however you like!
War Priests are Clerics who excel in combat, gaining special abilities to enhance their attacks. Their ‘Guided Strike’ ability ensures their hits always land. At level 6, they can even extend this benefit to their allies, helping the whole party fight with confidence in difficult battles. By level 8, ‘Divine Strike’ adds significant damage to their attacks, consistently punishing enemies turn after turn.
For players new to the game, this close-combat build is one of the simplest to create, without requiring a complicated character concept. Despite its simplicity, it’s incredibly powerful, combining strong fighting skills with healing magic, making it almost entirely self-sufficient – a truly dominant close-range character in Dungeons & Dragons.
Okay, fellow D&D players, I’m curious – what melee build have you discovered is totally overpowered? Seriously, which one breaks the game? Let me know in the comments, or come chat about it over in the ComicBook Forum!
