Despite being one of the longest-running sci-fi shows ever, Doctor Who hasn’t had a huge number of video games. There are around a dozen titles available, starting with a game released for the BBC Micro in 1983. Turning the show into enjoyable games has proven tricky, but some are still worth playing. Here’s a ranking of the top five, based on original reviews, how fun they are, and their impact on the Doctor Who universe.
1) Doctor Who: The Adventure Games

In 2010, the BBC released Doctor Who: The Adventure Games as a free download for people in the United Kingdom, with other countries gaining access later. Although five episodes were created, the BBC ultimately decided to focus on developing games for consoles instead, which led to the cancellation of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. Sadly, this means the game is now very difficult to play. It was removed from Steam in 2017, so finding a physical copy is the only option. Despite a slow start with critics, fans really enjoyed the game, praising its engaging story and fun gameplay, but it’s largely disappeared from availability.
2) Doctor Who: Legacy

It’s a sign of limited choices when a simple match-3 puzzle game ranks among the best in a series. That was the case with Doctor Who: Legacy, a fun, free-to-play game released in 2013 to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary. The game included all the Doctors – even the War Doctor – plus a huge cast of companions, monsters, and aliens. While the 11th Doctor was initially the main focus, the game later shifted to feature the 12th Doctor. Sadly, like many games of this type, it’s no longer available because the license expired.
3) Doctor Who: Destiny Of The Doctors

Doctor Who: Destiny of the Doctors is an action game made with significant support from the BBC, boasting voice acting from five different actors who have played the Doctor. While some earlier Doctors are represented through voice impersonators, the game features a large and engaging story focused on the Master, who all the Doctors must defeat. The entire adventure takes place almost entirely inside the TARDIS, which is filled with countless rooms, and players will solve puzzles and overcome challenges as they progress. Though it wasn’t a big hit in stores, the game feels like a special anniversary episode of the show and is a favorite among fans who have been able to find a copy.
4) Doctor Who: The Runaway

Most Doctor Who games are designed for computers, but Doctor Who: The Runaway is different – it’s a virtual reality experience. Released in 2019, it centers around the Thirteenth Doctor. It’s relatively short, feeling more like an interactive tour than a traditional game, but it’s enjoyable and engaging. There are two ways to play: a 13-minute interactive experience, or an 11-minute 360-degree tour of the TARDIS and other iconic Doctor Who locations. Even if you don’t have a VR headset, you can still enjoy it as a cinematic video on YouTube.
5) Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I can tell you there’s just no contest when it comes to games based on the show. Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins, released in 2021, is easily the best! It came out on almost every gaming platform, and it’s genuinely scary – especially if you’re terrified of the Weeping Angels like me! It’s a really well-made, award-winning game with great graphics, and I think any Who fan would absolutely love it. Plus, it’s super affordable – you can find it on Steam for only $5.99, and it’s available on other platforms too.
