Creating a video game today is a huge undertaking, with developers working hard to make the best experience possible. You might not expect it, but many games actually include entire new games within them. For example, the original Animal Crossing for Nintendo 64 let you play emulated versions of classic NES and Famicom games. While fun, those were older titles. Other games have gone further, creating completely original games inside the main game. Here are five of the best examples – listed in no specific order.
1) Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the latest installment in the Wolfenstein series, continuing the story from Wolfenstein: New Order. A unique feature of the game is an arcade machine that plays a version of the original Wolfenstein 3D. While Wolfenstein 3D isn’t new, this version within The New Colossus offers a twist: you don’t play as B.J. Blazkowicz. Instead, you control Elite Hans, a Nazi version of the player character. This in-game version of the classic is significantly altered, making it feel like a completely new experience, and you can play through the entire game if you choose.
2) Star Wars: Jedi Survivor – Holotactics

Star Wars: Jedi Survivor continues the adventure of Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan) from Fallen Order, following his fight against the oppressive Galactic Empire. A key feature of the game is Holotactics – a strategic, autochess-like mode where you try to capture your opponent’s pieces. While it’s not the Holo Chess seen in the original Star Wars films, it’s still a lot of fun and adds to the game’s immersive atmosphere, keeping players engaged for hours.
3) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Gwent

Beyond being a fantastic game on its own, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt includes a surprisingly addictive card game called Gwent. Gwent, based on a game from the books, is similar to Magic: The Gathering. Players act as commanders, using different types of units – like close-combat fighters, ranged attackers, and siege weapons – to defeat their opponents. Success in Gwent requires both smart strategy and a bit of luck. It became so popular that it was released as a separate, free-to-play game!
4) Night in the Woods – Demontower

Okay, so I was playing Night in the Woods, and I noticed this little cat icon on the main character’s laptop. Turns out, clicking it opens up a completely separate game called Demontower! It’s a full-on hack-and-slash dungeon crawler where you play as a cat, which is awesome. You can find weapons and stuff, and there are even different endings depending on how you play. What’s really cool isn’t just that it’s a game inside a game, but that Demontower feels like a complete game that could’ve been sold on its own. It’s actually really fun and well-made!
5) Stardew Valley – Jumino Kart

Stardew Valley is a remarkably successful indie game, especially considering it was created by just one person. Even years after its release in 2016, the game continues to receive updates that add new content and give players more to do. Surprisingly, within Stardew Valley, you can find a fully playable game called Jumino Kart. This fun, retro-style autorunner is found as an arcade machine in the local pub and offers a delightful distraction that fits well with the game’s overall themes.
