Video games are generally designed to be fun and engaging, but some go beyond simple entertainment. While many offer a relaxing escape, others present genuinely difficult moral choices and encourage players to think outside the box. The most clever games intentionally challenge a player’s expectations, not to frustrate them, but to showcase innovative design and a unique approach to gameplay. They aim to surprise and intrigue, proving just how creative games can be.
1) Metal Gear Solid (1998)

As a huge fan, I always say that Metal Gear Solid is one of the best games ever made! Everyone loved it when it came out, and for good reason. The stealth was incredible, the story was gripping and full of action, and the cutscenes were just amazing. But there’s this one part that still blows my mind: the Psycho Mantis fight. He somehow reads your memory card! If you’ve been playing other games on your PlayStation, he’ll actually mention them, which is so weird and breaks the immersion completely. The only way to beat him is to unplug your controller and plug it into the second player slot – it totally throws him off and turns him into a regular boss instead of this creepy guy who knows your gaming habits!
2) Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem (2002)

Survival horror games often try to unsettle players, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem does this in a particularly clever way. The game deliberately messes with you, making you question what’s happening with your own TV. It might suddenly lower the volume or prevent you from saving, and these aren’t just in-game events – they’re called “Sanity Effects,” a feature Nintendo actually patented. These effects start in the second chapter and begin as part of the game, but they quickly become more elaborate, even simulating errors with your GameCube console or TV as if something is actually malfunctioning.
3) Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)

Generally, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a fantastic Batman game, blending stealth and action-adventure gameplay. Many players consider it one of the best games ever created, and definitely a standout title based on DC Comics. While much of the game follows familiar genre conventions, things take a surprising turn when you encounter Scarecrow. He dramatically alters the story, essentially restarting the game back to the beginning with Batman imprisoned by the Joker inside the asylum. The game deliberately keeps the player in the dark, leaving you uncertain about what’s happening until Scarecrow’s plan is revealed.
4) The Stanley Parable (2013)

Some games try to confuse you, but The Stanley Parable does it just for the fun of it. You play as a quiet character named Stanley, and a narrator tells the story as you explore different paths. The game adapts to whatever choices you make, constantly moving the story forward. It’s really a game about playing games, and it does it exceptionally well. It’s most enjoyable when you ignore what the narrator says, which often leads to funny and surprising outcomes. No matter what you decide, the game always responds in a clever way, almost making it seem like you’re interacting with a truly intelligent artificial intelligence.
5) There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (2020)

There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension is a puzzle game that actively resists being played. It’s brilliantly strange – the game immediately tries to prevent you from starting, claiming it’s incomplete and doesn’t want to be played. If you attempt to begin, you’re redirected to a fake operating system that instructs you not to do certain things. The game’s refusal to cooperate is intentional and a core part of the experience; figuring out how to play is a puzzle in itself. It’s a layered, mind-bending game that’s incredibly enjoyable precisely because it messes with your expectations – and that’s not a flaw, it’s a design choice.
