Most multiplayer games focus on teamwork, but extraction shooters offer a unique solo experience. Arc Raiders proved people enjoy playing these games on their own, and Bungie’s Marathon is building on that idea. Marathon stands out because it lets you customize your character with ‘Runner Shells,’ which are similar to the heroes you find in hero shooter games. Each Shell has special abilities and encourages a different way to play.
Bungie’s new extraction shooter emphasizes how players work together, take risks, and stay alive in challenging areas. Some character abilities work best when coordinating with a team, while others let you thrive on your own with quick movement. If you’re playing solo, choosing the right character loadout (‘shell’) is crucial for survival – it can mean successfully escaping with valuable items or losing everything in a fight. Here are five of the best ‘Runner’ shells to use in Marathon if you plan on playing by yourself.
5) Vandal

Vandal is a solid choice for playing alone, offering powerful abilities, though she isn’t quite as self-sufficient as some other Runners. This means playing Vandal solo requires a bit of strategic thinking. Her Disrupt Cannon is particularly useful, providing both extra damage and the ability to manipulate enemy positions on the map.
Vandal really stands out due to her incredible mobility. She can jump more often and powerfully slide, letting her quickly escape danger or rush towards enemies. This makes her a very strong and intimidating character to face in Marathon, and also helps her stay alive. However, learning to use these movement abilities effectively can be challenging, especially for new players.
Being able to move quickly and strategically is a huge advantage when you’re playing alone. Vandal’s skills let you control where you go and also force your opponents to move. Successfully repositioning, pushing forward, or falling back are essential for surviving on your own with this Runner Shell. Players who become skilled with Vandal in Marathon will be very difficult to beat in solo games.
4) Thief

Okay, so I’ve been playing the Thief Runner Shell, and she’s amazing for anyone who loves grabbing loot – seriously, she’s built for it! She’s got all these awesome gadgets that help you move quickly and scout ahead. The catch? She needs those gadgets. When they’re recharging, she’s super squishy and easy to take down. I usually play solo, and I like to avoid fights unless I know I’ve got the upper hand. The Thief class is perfect for that – it’s all about setting up advantages and knowing when to strike.
In Thief, the main goal is to steal items and escape without getting into fights. The game’s X-Ray Visor helps you find loot, showing how valuable it is, and lets you grab it quickly. While not useful in combat, it can also tell you if someone else has already looted a container. The grapple and drone are the two most important tools players will use to achieve this.
The grapple is a really useful tool for quickly moving around or getting away from trouble. Being able to move up and down is especially important in Marathon, particularly when you’re running through cities or trying to avoid enemies. The drone is great for scouting ahead, helping you find both enemies and AI threats. Combining these two tools is essential for playing as a Thief on your own, but remember to keep track of how long it takes for them to recharge.
3) Rook

Rook is a unique character designed for solo play, and his real strength comes from the items he starts with rather than his inherent skills. He begins matches late, after most other players have already left, and he automatically spawns with a free backpack and shield. This allows you to start runs with very little risk while still having the potential to extract with a large amount of loot.
Playing solo in Marathon is much easier with Rook. Their Signal Mask ability lets you bypass some enemy encounters, reducing the number of fights you have to manage on your own. Plus, Rook’s Recuperation ability provides built-in healing, which is crucial when you don’t have teammates to rely on for recovery. This self-healing keeps you in the action longer and allows you to recover between fights without needing to retreat.
Rook gets a boost from unlocking faction perks, which can give you better starting gear for each run. This puts you at an advantage right away, before you even face other players. The further you advance in the game, the stronger Rook becomes. This consistent improvement makes Rook a top choice for playing solo, although it’s held back a bit by limited movement and attack options.
2) Recon

Recon is the best Runner Shell in Marathon for gathering information. She’s effective both in team games and when playing alone. Knowing where enemies are—whether other players or UESC forces—is key to success, letting you decide when to escape or attack. Recon’s Tracker Drone and Echo Pulse help you find enemies and track their movements, allowing you to carefully plan your actions and control the flow of battle.
When you’re playing alone, knowing what your opponents are doing is often more helpful than having powerful weapons. Understanding where enemies are allows you to choose the best strategy – fight them head-on, sneak past, or set up a surprise attack. The Recon ability quickly reveals all enemy locations, and experienced players can even tell the difference between computer-controlled enemies and other players. If you prefer not to use the scan, you can deploy your reconnaissance drone to automatically locate the nearest enemy. This is a great way to find out if another player is hiding nearby and lure them into the open.
Recon isn’t very mobile, but excels at gathering information, allowing you to make smart choices. Her abilities also provide useful alerts, like when someone pings you or helps you find injured enemies. Although much of her kit works well with a team, Recon’s intelligence tools are still incredibly valuable even when playing solo.
1) Assassin

It’s no surprise the Runner Shell is so popular – it’s designed for stealth! Its abilities perfectly match the playstyle of many solo players who prefer to move quietly and strike quickly. The best part is Active Camo, which lets you travel across the map with a much lower chance of being spotted – it even works in smoke, including smoke created by your own abilities or grenades.
In Marathon, being sneaky is just as important as being strong. Players who go it alone often need to pick their battles carefully instead of running into every fight. The Active Camo ability lets Assassin characters slip into buildings unnoticed, watch what enemies are doing, escape when things get tough, and attack at the perfect time.
Smoke Screen gives players more control during battles. When activated, it creates a ‘Shroud’ that significantly helps in close-quarters combat. This lets Assassin players quickly surprise enemies, eliminate them, and then escape before anyone else can react. For many solo players of Marathon, the game is about fast attacks and precise movement, and the Assassin class perfectly captures that style of play.
