Character development is a tricky but important element in comic books. Marvel and DC superheroes are built to star in ongoing stories that can last for years, even decades. This creates a challenge: characters need to stay true to themselves so readers still recognize them, but they also can’t stay exactly the same. Readers enjoy seeing heroes evolve and grow over time, and comics offer a unique opportunity to witness that long-term development in a way that most other forms of entertainment don’t.
Even though comic book characters often return to their original state and new writers might drastically change established storylines, character development still matters. Seeing characters grow and improve mirrors our own lives, and their journeys can deeply affect readers. Today, we’ll be highlighting five of the best character arcs Marvel has delivered over the last decade. Let’s take a look at how these characters have changed.
5) Magneto

As a lifelong cinema and comics fan, I’ve always found Magneto to be one of the most compelling characters. It’s fascinating how, ever since his backstory was revealed – showing his experiences in World War II – he’s constantly shifted between being a hero, a troubled anti-hero, and a full-on villain. He started as a pretty one-dimensional bad guy, but over time, he became a much more complex figure, driven by a desperate need to protect mutants from what he believed was certain destruction. While the ’90s and 2000s often portrayed him as a villain again, the emergence of Krakoa really seemed to solidify his moral compass. And then, when he finally passed away – even the incredibly powerful ‘Five’ couldn’t bring him back – he ended up in this strange, purgatory-like realm where he was forced to confront the weight of all the lives he’d taken while trying to save his people.
I remember when Storm went into that other realm to try and save Magneto. It wasn’t about punishing him for everything he’d done wrong, but showing him all the lives he had saved. It was amazing to see how that changed him, restoring his hope and bringing him back to life with a real desire to help people, not control them. After so many years of conflict, he finally seemed to be on the same page as Professor X, working towards a better future for mutants, though his methods were definitely more…intense than Charles’. It was incredible – Magneto truly became the hero and symbol we always knew he could be.
4) Elektra

Elektra and Daredevil have had a complicated relationship for years – sometimes allies, sometimes enemies. Even when they were dating in college, she was a disruptive force in his life. However, everything shifted when Daredevil turned himself in for a crime. Elektra realized she needed his help to finally defeat the Hand, so she decided to prove herself worthy of his trust by taking over his role as protector of Hell’s Kitchen. She became the new Daredevil, embracing the title of the Woman Without Fear, and immediately got to work.
Elektra’s initial attempts to appear superior evolved into a genuine commitment to heroism. She discovered a passion for fighting for justice, even with her difficult past. By the time Matt was released from prison, Elektra had fully embraced her role as a hero, leaving her villainous life behind. She continues to protect New York as its second Daredevil, working alongside – and sometimes independently of – Matt to keep the city safe. Her transformation from a typical assassin to a complex and compelling character was remarkable and satisfying to witness.
3) Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff has had a very difficult ten years. The 2015 Scarlet Witch storyline revealed she and her brother Pietro weren’t mutants or Magneto’s children, a change many fans, including myself, still dislike. However, this sparked a journey of self-discovery, leading her to accept her destiny as a powerful witch who wields Chaos Magic. For two decades, Wanda has been largely defined by the events of House of M, but she’s finally come to terms with her past and received forgiveness for her actions.
The Scarlet Witch is stronger and more confident than ever, having moved past her difficult history. She’s constantly pushing herself forward, and her recent appointment as the Sorcerer Supreme perfectly demonstrates that growth. Wanda’s path to becoming a powerful and respected witch was filled with hardship, but she’s finally found peace and earned the world’s respect. Becoming Sorcerer Supreme feels like a natural progression for her, and I’m eager to see what she does next.
2) Norman Osborn

Norman Osborn is best known as Spider-Man’s greatest enemy, the Green Goblin. He famously caused immense pain to Peter Parker, most notably with the death of Gwen Stacy. However, Norman has undergone significant changes. In Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #49, he was freed from his evil deeds, leaving him remorseful and shattered. Even when those dark impulses returned, Norman actively tried to redeem himself and become a hero. He ultimately became a dedicated ally to Spider-Man, supporting him even when others wouldn’t.
Norman Osborn’s character really took off when Peter Parker was sent into space. Recognizing New York still needed a Spider-Man, Norman took on the responsibility of protecting Peter’s heroic role while he was away. This experience showed Norman just how important Spider-Man was to the city – and to himself – and motivated him to become a better person. He did an amazing job as Spider-Man, even though he knew he’d eventually have to pass the mantle back to Peter. This heroic turn for Norman Osborn is the most compelling thing to happen to the character since the ‘Dark Reign’ storyline, and it’s exciting to see where it goes next.
1) The Hulk

The way Bruce Banner and the Hulk were developed in Immoral Hulk was truly groundbreaking. It redefined the Hulk’s origins, linking him to a powerful, dark cosmic force and firmly placing him within the world of magic. Often, changing a character’s established scientific origins to magic feels forced, but in this case, it worked brilliantly. The story cleverly connected all previous changes to the Hulk’s history and ultimately explored a central question: is Bruce Banner truly a good person?
Ultimately, this story was about the Hulk finding self-forgiveness. It showed Bruce Banner and his different Hulk personalities working together more harmoniously than ever before. He came to accept all aspects of himself, which allowed him to be more understanding of others’ flaws. The story highlighted that everyone carries their own inner struggles, and the Hulk realized he needed to support those around him, as they could support each other. Though this development has since been reversed, it remains a powerfully emotional story from the last ten years.
