One of the things that keeps anime exciting is its variety of genres. While popular choices like fantasy, sci-fi, and action are common, many shows blend in less familiar genres to create something truly unique. Subtle changes to the setting, clever use of familiar themes, and detailed world-building can all give an anime a fresh and appealing feel. Ultimately, viewers appreciate originality – nobody wants to see the same story repeated endlessly.
Neo-noir is a fascinating anime genre that doesn’t get discussed as much as others. It builds on the classic film noir style – think complex characters, a shadowy mood, and a sense of loneliness – but adds modern twists like technology and evolving social themes. This list highlights some of the best neo-noir anime series and explains why they’re worth watching.
5) Ergo Proxy

Despite not being widely known, Ergo Proxy is a compelling anime series with a deep and thought-provoking story. Many fans consider it one of the best science fiction shows from the early 2000s, and it’s gained a devoted following. The show has a distinctive visual style, reminiscent of classic film noir with its dark and moody atmosphere, but it blends this with futuristic technology to create a unique, neo-noir world. Ergo Proxy explores complex themes of what it means to be human and questions morality, all while maintaining a captivating and mysterious central plot.
After a disaster nearly destroyed Earth, the few remaining humans live in massive, protected cities called domes. In the city of Romdeau, people coexist with highly advanced cyborgs known as AutoReivs. When a strange sickness starts affecting the AutoReivs, it gives them consciousness and drives them to commit violent acts. Re-l Mayer is assigned to investigate both the illness and the crimes, which leads her to discover the existence of powerful beings called Proxies and a larger conspiracy surrounding them.
4) Pyscho-Pass

During its release, Psycho-Pass was a highly popular anime that fit the neo-noir style. The series explores thought-provoking themes like crime, what’s right and wrong, free will, and the power of government – topics that feel especially important today. Though it features futuristic technology and a dystopian setting, Psycho-Pass maintains a classic film noir atmosphere, setting it apart from typical science fiction shows.
I watched Psycho-Pass and it’s set way in the future, where this system called the Sibyl System basically runs everything. It constantly scans people to figure out how likely they are to commit crimes – they call it their ‘Psycho-Pass.’ If your number gets too high, you’re arrested or even eliminated before you’ve done anything. The story follows Akane Tsunemori as she starts working as an Enforcer for the system, and she quickly realizes it’s not as perfect or just as it seems. As she gets deeper into her job, she uncovers a lot of corruption and unfairness.
3) Darker Than Black

Darker Than Black is a truly underrated anime. It perfectly captures the neo-noir style, blending exciting action with a dark, morally complex story, sci-fi themes, and a constant feeling of isolation for its main character. What really set it apart when it first came out was its unique take on superpowers – instead of being a gift, they’re presented as a burden.
The story begins with the sudden appearance of two strange portals on Earth – Heaven’s Gate and Hell’s Gate. One of these, Hell’s Gate, has opened in Tokyo, bringing with it a wave of “Contractors” – people who’ve made deals to gain supernatural abilities. Most people in Tokyo don’t know about them. Hei is one of these Contractors, working secretly for a powerful organization called the Syndicate. He uses his ability to control electricity to complete dangerous missions for them.
2) Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is a highly influential anime celebrated for its stylish neo-noir look and feel. It uniquely blends elements of Westerns, science fiction, action, and noir, making it stand out from other shows. The series delves into complex themes like revenge, overcoming trauma, the importance of found family, and confronting the past, all within a compelling and fast-paced story. Despite its brief run, Cowboy Bebop remains a critically acclaimed favorite.
I absolutely love Cowboy Bebop! It’s set way in the future, 2071 to be exact, after Earth has been mostly left behind as people spread out across the galaxy. The show follows the crew of the spaceship Bebop – a really quirky bunch – as they travel the solar system, chasing down criminals for rewards. Each episode usually has its own self-contained story, but there’s this amazing underlying plot that slowly unfolds. It’s really about the characters, especially Spike, and how they’re all grappling with their pasts and trying to figure out where they belong. It’s just brilliant!
1) Monster

Many anime fans consider Monster to be one of the greatest crime thrillers ever made, largely due to its unsettling villain who shares disturbing similarities with real-life murderers. Released in 2004, the series continues to be popular and sparks discussion about complex themes like forgiveness, the impact of our decisions, and the essence of evil. If you want an anime with a clear story that also makes you think deeply about the characters and their motivations, Monster is an excellent choice.
The story of Monster centers around Kenzo Tenma, a highly skilled surgeon, who must make a difficult choice: save a young boy or the city’s mayor. He chooses to save the boy, Johan Liebert, a decision that ruins his career and reputation. Years later, when a series of horrific murders occur, Kenzo discovers that Johan is the killer. Now a fugitive himself, Kenzo dedicates himself to hunting down Johan and bringing him to justice for his crimes.
