Fantasy continues to be incredibly popular, proving that people still love stories with magic, dragons, and complicated plots. With new seasons of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms coming next year, 2025 also brought back some major hits. The Wheel of Time really hit its stride in its third season, getting the best reviews so far by fully embracing the detailed world of the books and delivering epic battle scenes that pleased fans. The Witcher had the difficult challenge of recasting its main actor, and while reactions to Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia were varied, the show still kept most of its audience.
In 2025, while established fantasy shows remained popular, several new series also stood out. Streaming platforms continued to invest heavily in original fantasy content, experimenting with different styles like portal, urban, and adult animation. These new shows demonstrated that a large budget isn’t necessary for a captivating story – strong characters and a unique look are what truly matter.
5) Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Starz cleverly broadened the world of its popular drama Outlander with Blood of My Blood, a prequel that features two love stories set in different eras. The series shows how Jamie Fraser’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, fell in love in 18th-century Scotland, and also follows the romance of Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, during World War I. Though some reviewers felt the connection between the characters wasn’t as instant as in the original show, the series received high marks for its beautiful visuals and the actors’ performances. Ultimately, Outlander: Blood of My Blood is a satisfying and well-made addition to the Outlander story, offering fans more of what they love without taking big risks.
4) The Wayfinders

The fantasy genre recently saw a resurgence with The Wayfinders, a series that captures the spirit of classic, family-friendly adventure shows from the 90s. The show follows three high school students—Flynn Griffin (Evan Nikolas Fields), Oaklee Jones (Tamara Smart), and Cash Calloway (Vincent Mattis)—who are unexpectedly transported to a magical world of swords and sorcery. To find their way back home, they must join forces with a charming rogue named Calibor (Lawrence Walker), a priestess named Aurora (Issy Knopfler), and a teenage werebear named Kavan (Sam Buchanan). The Wayfinders premiered on Angel Studios and, while it didn’t receive much attention from critics, it quickly gained a dedicated fanbase thanks to its sincere storytelling and lively direction by Glen Winter. Though it’s not as dark or complicated as some other fantasy shows, The Wayfinders shines by focusing on the joy of the genre, offering a bright and hopeful adventure that’s ideal for younger viewers.
3) Devil May Cry

As a huge fan of both anime and video game adaptations, I was really impressed with Netflix’s Devil May Cry. They absolutely nailed the over-the-top action and cool vibe of the Capcom games. The series follows Dante, voiced brilliantly by Johnny Yong Bosch, as he runs a quirky business while basically saving the world from monsters. A new bad guy, the White Rabbit (Hoon Lee does a great job with the voice), shows up and things get intense. Honestly, the animation by Studio Mir is incredible – it perfectly captures the fast-paced, combo-heavy fighting from the games and is just a visual feast. While some fans weren’t thrilled with the slightly different timeline, most critics loved it, and Netflix quickly greenlit another season, which is fantastic because Dante clearly has a lot more demons to hunt!
2) Talamasca: The Secret Order

The Immortal Universe on AMC expanded in a major way with Talamasca: The Secret Order, a procedural that finally shines a light on the secret society that monitors the supernatural world. The series stars Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton), a law student who discovers he has been tracked his entire life by the organization, leading him into a hidden world of vampires, witches, and ancient conspiracies. Critics hailed the show as the connective tissue the franchise needed, praising its ability to blend the gothic horror of Anne Rice’s novels with the tension of a spy thriller. With standout performances from Helen (Elizabeth McGovern) and Jasper (William Fichtner), the series offers a human perspective on the magical events of the universe, making it a compelling drama even for those who haven’t seen the other shows.
1) The Mighty Nein

Following the success of The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein exceeded expectations as another fantastic adaptation of the Critical Role series. This Prime Video show centers on a group of flawed but compelling characters in the divided land of Wildemount, who must unite when a dangerous artifact threatens everything. Critics loved the show’s focus on its characters and how it explored difficult topics like overcoming past trauma and finding redemption, particularly through characters like Jester Lavorre (voiced by Laura Bailey) and Caleb Widogast (voiced by Liam O’Brien). With improved animation and the same incredible chemistry from the voice actors, The Mighty Nein quickly became a standout fantasy series in 2025.
