A character’s backstory is a crucial element in any story, adding depth and helping to build a believable world. In One Piece, flashbacks are particularly important and consistently well-received, no matter whose story they focus on. These glimpses into the past, whether about a fan-favorite like Sanji or a villain like Doflamingo, are often heartbreaking and insightful. However, these backstories sometimes feel rushed because the main plot needs to keep moving. Important life events are often only briefly touched upon, as the story can’t spend too much time exploring the past.
I’ve noticed that if this series delved into every single detail of each character’s past, the story would likely go on forever. It’s not that these backstories are incomplete, but they actually create opportunities to explore those characters even more. We’ve already seen this happen with popular characters like Portgas D. Ace and Trafalgar Law, who both got their own spin-off novels. While the original author doesn’t write these novels himself, he oversees them and they’re officially published, which is a big reason why fans enjoy them so much. And honestly, I think a few other characters – including the five we’ve been discussing – deserve the same treatment.
5) Boa Hancock

Boa Hancock is renowned as the world’s most beautiful woman, the captain of the Kuja Pirates, and a former Warlord of the Sea. Her path to power wasn’t easy. As a child, she and her sisters were enslaved, but they were freed by Fisher Tiger. She then rose to a leadership position to protect the people of Amazon Lily. A World Noble forced her to eat the Love-Love Fruit, which she mastered to become incredibly powerful. While the manga hints at her complex history, Boa Hancock’s life story deserves a detailed look at all the significant events she experienced.
4) Kozuki Oden

Oden is considered one of Wano’s most powerful samurai, and his life story is truly remarkable. Born as the heir to the Kozuki Clan, he carried significant duties, but he was a free spirit who refused to be constrained. Before joining Roger’s crew for a time, he sailed with Whitebeard. Oden was among the very few to reach the legendary Laugh Tale, a feat he accomplished through his unique ability to decipher the ancient Poneglyphs. While his backstory is a highlight of the series, many fans feel that certain parts of his adventures could have been explored in greater detail.
3) Montblanc Noland

Noland, a remarkable explorer who lived around 400 years ago, became known as a liar after claiming to have discovered a city of gold. He found an island with remnants of a lost civilization and befriended Calgara, a local warrior. When Noland returned home, he told his king about Shandora, hoping to establish a friendly relationship. However, the king, motivated by greed, had Noland executed for supposedly deceiving him, never learning the truth about Calgara’s home. Unbeknownst to everyone, the island had been launched into the sky by a powerful current and remained there, leading to centuries of misfortune.
2) Nico Robin

Nico Robin, a fan favorite from One Piece, has a particularly heartbreaking past. Her suffering began with the tragic events of Ohara, and for the next 20 years, she was forced to live in hiding, constantly fleeing the World Government. As a child, she struggled to survive, seen as a threat by everyone she encountered. Although the story touches on her time with various groups and criminals, it hasn’t fully explored her difficult life before she met Luffy and joined the Straw Hat Pirates.
1) Bartholomew Kuma

The manga tells the story of Kuma’s life, from his birth through the devastating events that led him to become a Pacifista. Despite covering so much, there’s still a lot to learn about his past – like his time with Ginny, his adventures as a Revolutionary, and his life as a loving father. Kuma’s story is deeply emotional and reveals a surprisingly dark side of the world, offering fans a new perspective.
