5 Best Tower Defense Games, Ranked

Tower defense games have a long history, starting with classics like Space Invaders from 1978. The genre has changed a lot since then, moving from simple 2D gameplay to 3D experiences and even blending with other types of games, like first-person shooters. With so many tower defense games available – and new ones coming out all the time – we decided to find the best. We reviewed dozens of titles, considering what critics thought when they were released, how popular they are, and most importantly, how enjoyable they are to play. We picked the best game from each series to bring you our top five.

5) Orcs Must Die! 2

The original Orcs Must Die! was a groundbreaking action-tower defense game, and Orcs Must Die! 2 takes everything that made the first game great and expands on it. While the gameplay is similar, the sequel adds a cooperative mode, letting you play with a friend. What really sets this series apart is its unique blend of first-person shooter and role-playing elements within the tower defense genre. It’s a fast-paced, 3D action game where you’re not just building defenses – you’re actively fighting off the Orcs yourself. It’s a truly fantastic game and easily one of the best tower defense titles available.

4) Rush Royale

I’m really into Rush Royale – it’s a mobile game that’s a cool mix of card games and tower defense. Basically, you’re defending against waves of monsters, but instead of building towers, you play cards to summon units. It’s made by My.Games, and honestly, it’s super addictive! You fight monsters on a 3×5 grid, and there are tons of heroes and different strategies you can use. It’s got co-op if you want to team up with friends, or you can go head-to-head in PvP battles. It came out in late 2020, and it’s crazy to think it’s already been downloaded over 50 million times – it’s still hugely popular, and I can see why!

3) Defense Grid: The Awakening

I remember when tower defense games started to get a real upgrade with 3D graphics – it all kicked off around the time Defense Grid: The Awakening came out on Xbox 360, PC, and Mac. And honestly, that game was amazing! It wasn’t just about placing towers; the gameplay felt really dynamic, there was a cool backstory, and you had tons of different ways to build your defenses. They kept adding new content for years after, and it’s still a favorite of mine and a lot of other tower defense fans. It could have used a few more levels, but it was a seriously great game that really pushed the genre forward.

2) Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance

As a huge fan of tower defense games, I have to say the Kingdom Rush series is just incredible – some of the best to come out in years! The games look amazing, have really cool stories behind them, and there are so many different units you can upgrade and customize. While everything Ironhide Game Studio makes is fantastic, Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance is definitely a standout. Seriously, it’s packed with 34 characters you can level up, 18 different towers, and 16 epic heroes! It opens up so many awesome story paths. If you haven’t played it yet, you absolutely need to check it out!

1) Plants vs. Zombies

When it comes to tower defense games, Plants vs. Zombies from 2009 is truly exceptional. It’s packed with a charming story, lots of different ways to play, and evolves as you progress. The game was a huge hit, inspiring numerous sequels and similar titles. While other tower defense games might be more complicated, Plants vs. Zombies remains incredibly popular, and players often find themselves coming back to it years later, enjoying it just as much – or even more – than before.
