Dragon Ball Daima, the newest series in the Dragon Ball universe, is particularly significant as it’s the last project Akira Toriyama, the creator, ever worked on. Despite only having twenty episodes, the show brilliantly embodies what made the original Dragon Ball so beloved. At first, its brief length led many to believe it would be a simple side story.
As the story of *Daima* unfolded, it introduced some surprising plot twists that added depth to the series’ history and even changed how fans understood previously established events. The series revisits things like the origins of Majin Buu and the Super Saiyan 3 transformation, presenting major changes to what fans thought they knew. These changes even create some inconsistencies with the timeline of the later series, *Dragon Ball Super*. Here are five of the most unexpected retcons.
5) Dabura Isn’t What Dragon Ball Z Showed
Dabura, the Demon King who arrived on Earth with Babidi, was initially presented as the primary villain of the last story arc in *Dragon Ball Z*. He was shown as incredibly evil, one of the worst beings imaginable. But the series *Dragon Ball Daima* has shared details about his history that have caused fans to reconsider who he really was and what role he played.
The Third Eye is an incredibly powerful artifact that can turn its user into a Supreme Demon King. However, Dabura surprisingly rejected its power, even turning against his father who was using it to rule cruelly. This implies Dabura wasn’t originally evil, which is different from how he’s shown in *Dragon Ball Z*. If he *had* been willing to use the artifact, he could have become stronger than even Goku and Vegeta. It seems his good nature might have been his weakness, allowing Babidi to take advantage of him and manipulate him, despite Dabura being a good person all along.
4) Namekian’s Origins
Dragon Ball Daima is shaking things up by rewriting some of the franchise’s history, and that includes a big change to the origins of the Namekians. Previously, it was always believed the Namekians came from the planet Namek. But Daima introduces a new version of this well-known story.
The series now shows that the Namekians, like the Kai and others with pointed ears, originally come from the Demon Realm. Interestingly, they weren’t always free – they were actually slaves there and fled to escape hardship. Considering how Planet Namek was later attacked by Frieza, this new backstory in *Dragon Ball Daima* gives their history even more emotional depth and solidifies them as one of the most unfortunate races in the Dragon Ball universe.
3) Majin Buu’s Origin
The last major storyline created for the original *Dragon Ball Z* series, the Majin Buu Saga, established that Bibidi was the one who originally created Majin Buu, the saga’s primary villain. However, the newer series, *Daima*, quickly changes this, revealing that a witch named Marba from the Demon Realm was actually the original creator, and Bibidi simply hired her to do the work.
Marba’s introduction changes the backstory of not only Majin Buu, but also the Saibamen. She explains that she originally created the Saibamen and sold their seeds years ago. Before this, the Saibamen were thought to have been discovered by the Saiyans on a conquered planet – a lucky find. Now, it seems the Saiyans simply found something Marba had already made, which suggests she could be one of the most powerful characters in the entire *Dragon Ball* series.
2) Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 Transformation Breaks Many Established Rules with Its Debut
Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form in *Daima* is a significant improvement over his version in *GT*, largely because of the detailed design of the transformation. However, this creates a problem when considering the timeline and *Dragon Ball Super*. In *Super*, during his fight with Beerus, Goku specifically said that Super Saiyan 3 was his most powerful form.
Now that *Daima* is officially part of the Dragon Ball story, Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form changes things that happened in *Super*. This has even led fans to wonder if *Super* is still considered official, especially with talk about where the series is headed next. Ultimately, this new transformation changes a lot about what we already know, making the future of Dragon Ball unclear.
1) Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 3 Transformation
As a longtime Dragon Ball fan, I was absolutely floored when Vegeta finally went Super Saiyan 3! It was something we’d all been hoping to see for ages. What really blew my mind wasn’t just *that* he transformed, but *how* he did it. Everyone assumed Super Saiyan 3 meant long, flowing hair like Goku’s, but Vegeta kept his signature spiky style, just longer! It totally proved that long hair wasn’t a requirement for the form, and it was such a cool, unexpected twist.
Additionally, how Vegeta unlocked this transformation challenges what we previously understood about Super Saiyan 3. Goku had said he needed seven years of training as a spirit to reach the form, implying it required special conditions. Gotenks, as a fusion, seemed to reinforce this idea. But Vegeta achieving it purely through intense training demonstrates his incredible skill and, in *Dragon Ball Daima*, changes a fundamental aspect of the transformation. This suggests Vegeta might eventually become stronger than Goku if he keeps striving to improve.
