Cartoon Network revolutionized animated TV when it debuted in the 1990s. It started by showing older cartoons, but quickly became known for original, creator-focused shows. This led to a wave of incredibly popular series that changed what children’s entertainment could be. These shows were unique, featuring a bold sense of humor, eye-catching animation, and surprisingly complex stories that appealed to viewers of all ages – many have become lasting parts of pop culture. By consistently taking risks with its programming, Cartoon Network established itself as a major force in animation, inspiring many artists and setting a high standard for quality that today’s studios still strive to meet.
Lately, Cartoon Network has been bringing back popular shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Totally Spies! with new seasons or spin-offs. Reboots of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends are also planned, showing that people still love these classic cartoons. Despite all this exciting news, some of the network’s most beloved shows from its golden age haven’t been announced for a comeback.
5) Codename: Kids Next Door

Codename: Kids Next Door was an exciting, action-packed show about five kids battling grown-up rules and unfairness, but on a neighborhood scale. What made it special was its creative world, with a treehouse headquarters and gadgets built from everyday objects, all suggesting a huge, secret organization. The series finale hinted at a much larger story involving space. Creator Tom Warburton tried to continue this story with Galactic: Kids Next Door in 2015, envisioning a sequel where a grown-up Numbuh 1 (voiced by Benjamin Diskin) fought to save Earth from a galactic threat. Although fans loved the idea and a short animated clip went viral, Cartoon Network decided not to move forward with the project. Warburton still hopes to bring the sequel to life and continues to pitch it at fan events.
4) The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy

As a long-time animation fan, I always loved how The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy was just…dark. Seriously, it took risks with its creepy humor that you rarely saw on kids’ TV. The show, created by Maxwell Atoms, starts with Billy and Mandy winning a limbo contest against the Grim Reaper – and forcing him to be their servant! That setup led to so much chaos, mixing genuinely unsettling monster designs with really clever, cynical jokes. The whole underworld setting was perfect for poking fun at horror movies and introducing all sorts of weird characters, like the Boogey Man and General Skarr. I was really excited when I heard Maxwell Atoms had pitched a reboot to Cartoon Network, but sadly, it never seemed to get off the ground. It’s a real shame, because a revival could have been amazing and really tapped into a unique part of the network’s past.
3) Ed, Edd n Eddy

Ed, Edd n Eddy was a defining cartoon of the late 1990s on Cartoon Network, known for its fast-paced energy, unique wobbly animation style, and relatable suburban setting. The show centers around Eddy, Double D, and Ed as they constantly try to trick the other kids in their neighborhood into giving them money for jawbreakers. This simple idea allowed creator Danny Antonucci to focus on over-the-top physical comedy and the funny conflicts between the characters. Because there were no adults around, the neighborhood was always in a state of hilarious chaos. The series ran for six seasons and ended with a movie in 2009. Despite ongoing requests from fans to bring the show back, Antonucci stated in a 2024 interview that a revival wouldn’t work and he has no desire to revisit these characters. He believes that even a continuation on Adult Swim would just repeat old ideas. Therefore, any future reboot would have to happen without the original creator, whose unique vision gave the show its signature energy.
2) Dexter’s Laboratory

Dexter’s Laboratory was one of the first big hits for Cartoon Network, and it heavily influenced the look and humor of the channel for ten years. The show follows Dexter, a boy genius who has a high-tech laboratory hidden behind his bedroom bookshelf. He’s constantly trying to protect his experiments from his mischievous older sister, Dee Dee. Creator Genndy Tartakovsky used a unique, angular art style and precise comedic timing to create a clever show that paid homage to science fiction and superhero stories. While many fans have asked for a reboot, Tartakovsky has stated he doesn’t plan to make one. He explained that the loss of Christine Cavanaugh, the voice of Dexter, was a major reason, as he felt her performance was key to the character’s spirit.
1) Courage the Cowardly Dog

Courage the Cowardly Dog both scared and delighted a whole generation of viewers by mixing real horror with silly, slapstick humor. The show follows Courage, a nervous pink dog (voiced by Marty Grabstein), who lives with the sweet Muriel Bagge (voiced by Thea White) and the grumpy Eustace Bagge (voiced by Lionel Wilson) in the isolated town of Nowhere, Kansas. Each episode traps the three in their farmhouse, and Courage must overcome his fear to save his owners from strange and frightening threats—everything from aliens to evil barbers. The show’s creator, John R. Dilworth, even made a prequel series called Before Courage in 2018, showing how the characters first met. Unfortunately, Cartoon Network canceled the project by 2022 to focus on other shows. While Courage briefly appeared in a 2021 movie with Scooby-Doo, Dilworth wasn’t involved. A true revival, led by the original creator, is needed because the unique, unsettling atmosphere of Courage the Cowardly Dog is missing from today’s television.
