Lots of Christmas movies are popular with everyone, even people who don’t celebrate the holiday. Films like Home Alone, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation are all well-loved classics. However, some movie fans prefer something a bit darker or scarier. Luckily, there are some great options for them too! Below are five movies that offer a different take on the traditional Christmas film. Be warned – most of these aren’t suitable for young children, though we’ve included one that is.
Want a Christmas movie with a bit more fright than the usual ghost story? Here are a few options to consider.
5) Black Christmas

Bob Clark, the director behind the beloved holiday film A Christmas Story, also made Black Christmas, a very different kind of movie. This highlights his range as a filmmaker, even though he also directed less successful films like Baby Geniuses.
Many consider this to be the most frightening film of the 1970s, rivaling The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in its ability to terrify. Like that classic, it relies on atmosphere and suggestion rather than gore. The movie expertly builds suspense using a limited setting – a sorority house – and a series of increasingly disturbing phone calls.

4) Gremlins

I’m so excited – they’ve finally announced a third Gremlins movie! This feels like the perfect time to revisit the original, especially if you’ve never seen it. I’m really hoping the new movie keeps that same holiday vibe as the first one – it was such a big part of what made it special. We’ll just have to wait and see, but I’m already getting into the holiday spirit thinking about it!
Joe Dante and Chris Columbus (who later directed the third film) were masters at capturing the feel of a charming, old-fashioned small town. It really feels like a place where life moves at a slower pace. But that peaceful atmosphere is quickly shattered by mischievous troublemakers who cause chaos while watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The movie perfectly blends dark humor with the wholesome innocence of shows like The Andy Griffith Show.

3) P2

Released in 2007, P2 didn’t get much attention in theaters, but it’s slowly gained a dedicated fanbase among those who’s seen it. This is well-earned, as the film is a genuinely suspenseful psychological horror movie set in a single location, featuring a strong performance from Rachel Nichols.
This story explores dangerous obsession and a hatred of women. It’s a chilling pursuit where the stalker is deeply detached from what’s real, making it feel frighteningly plausible. Despite taking place mostly in a parking garage, the film, P2, maintains suspense and keeps the story engaging right up to the very end.

2) Silent Night

With the new Silent Night, Deadly Night movie almost here, now’s a good time to get familiar with the series. If you only plan on watching one, though, the 2012 reboot is the best choice – it’s smoother and less jarring than the others.
Aside from its ending, the 2012 Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 is the strongest film in the series so far. If you’re curious, you can easily find the ending online – just search for “Garbage Day!”.

1) Terrifier 3

2024’s Terrifier 3 is a major success and a standout example of extreme horror. If you’re looking for a truly shocking and gory Christmas movie—one that includes a chainsaw in a very graphic scene—this film delivers.
Art the Clown remains a prominent figure in modern horror, but in this installment, Samantha Scaffidi’s character, Victoria – Art’s cruel accomplice – truly stands out. Scaffidi and Lauren LaVera, playing Sienna Shaw, both deliver compelling performances, creating characters who are as memorable and impactful as Art himself.
