Batman is a hugely popular and iconic character, first appearing in 1939 and remaining a dominant force in comics for over eight decades. Given his success, it’s natural that others have attempted to create similar heroes. The idea is simple: if Batman works so well, why wouldn’t a character with many of the same qualities also succeed? Many have tried to replicate his appeal, including DC Comics themselves.
DC Comics already has Batman, but they’ve often created characters inspired by him, just in case. Sometimes these imitations didn’t just disappear – they actually became popular heroes in their own right. Here are five characters who started as Batman copies but eventually became well-loved and unique figures.
5) Ghost-Maker

Ghost-Maker is a relatively new character, first appearing in Batman #100 (2016). He was introduced as a fellow traveler and competitor of Bruce Wayne’s from their shared global training. Both aimed to become highly skilled fighters, but their motivations differed: Bruce wanted to protect the world, while Ghost-Maker sought to dismantle criminal organizations simply for the challenge and skill involved. Notably, Ghost-Maker is a diagnosed psychopath, meaning he lacks empathy and fear. He essentially created a darker, more ruthless version of Batman, even having his own protégé, Phantom-One.
Look, when Ghost-Maker first showed up, I honestly saw him as just a darker, more brutal Batman. But after spending some time with the character, I’ve realized he’s so much more than that. He’s a genuinely compelling vigilante – violent, yes, but also incredibly fun to watch. This guy is loud, brimming with confidence, and seriously skilled. What really intrigues me, though, is his perspective. He’s a full-blown psychopath who chooses to fight for what’s right, and that’s a concept I think deserves its own series to really explore. He’s not just a dark reflection of Batman; he’s a fascinating character in his own right.
4) The Knight

The Knight first appeared in Batman #62 (1940) as essentially a British counterpart to Batman. Inspired by Batman and Robin, Percy Sheldrake, the Earl of Wordenshire, became a hero, with his son taking on the role of his sidekick, the Squire. The Knight was the first ‘Batman copycat’ to team up with the original and later joined important groups like the Batmen of All Nations, Club of Heroes, and Batman Incorporated. Over time, the Knight evolved from a simple imitation into a prime example of a lasting heroic legacy within DC Comics.
The Knight isn’t just one person, but a title passed down through generations, with each new Knight building on the achievements of those before them. It’s rare to see a hero’s identity continue so consistently without the original returning, making the Knight a powerful symbol of the United Kingdom’s dedication to heroism. The Knight isn’t simply an imitation of other heroes; they’re a prime example of how to create and sustain a lasting legacy, and that’s something worth recognizing.
3) Catman

Catman first appeared in Detective Comics #311 as a villain strikingly similar to Batman, but with a feline focus – and he was a wealthy Gotham socialite, to boot! Originally, he was simply a hunter trying to reclaim lost riches. However, Catman evolved into a much more complex character, eventually leading the Secret Six. This experience transformed him, giving him a personal code of honor. While still a criminal, Catman now often acts as an anti-hero, deciding whether to help or hinder based on his strong beliefs. He’s become a compelling figure who earns attention and respect through his unique moral compass.
2) Midnighter

From the beginning, Midnighter, with his aggressive nature, dark costume, and incredible fighting abilities, was clearly inspired by Batman, first appearing in StormWatch #4 (1997). While he initially shared many similarities with the Dark Knight – though with additions like cybernetic implants and a willingness to kill – he evolved into a unique character. Now, Midnighter is a prominent member of the Authority and frequently teams up with Superman when he needs to deal with particularly dangerous villains. He’s also notable as one of DC’s earliest openly gay characters, having married his teammate, Apollo.
With so many Batman-inspired characters around, Midnighter is different because he’s more than just a tough, punishing figure. He’s deeply suspicious and acts quickly, but also fiercely loyal and selfless when it comes to those he cares about. While he’s not afraid to use brutal methods, he’s ultimately a hero dedicated to saving the world – and he does it in a way that’s uniquely his own.
1) Green Arrow

Green Arrow is arguably DC’s most successful attempt to create another hero like Batman. When he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73, he was very similar to Batman, but with a Robin Hood-inspired theme – he even had a car called the Arrowcar, modeled after the Batmobile. However, Oliver Queen eventually evolved into a unique hero. He was later reimagined as someone who survived being stranded on a deserted island and became one of the first members added to the Justice League. He also distinguished himself by becoming DC’s main hero focused on social justice issues.
Green Arrow often challenges the status quo and actively works to improve society, frequently pointing out when his fellow heroes cross the line. He’s the League’s resident advocate for social change, but he’s also deeply flawed, a result of his troubled past and stubborn nature – famously, he dismissed his teenage sidekick for drug use. Unlike simply being a darker Batman, Green Arrow is a unique, passionate hero who’s earned a significant and respected place among the greatest superheroes.
These five characters initially resembled Batman, but they’ve evolved into unique and compelling heroes with their own significant roles in the DC Universe. Who’s your favorite?
