Pets greatly enrich our lives, serving as comforting allies during difficult moments, and despite their occasional mischief, they’re tough to stay angry with. It seems superheroes recognize this too, which might explain why many of them have animal companions. The Marvel Universe has some notable pets like Captain Marvel’s cat, Goose, and Lucky the Pizza Dog from Hawkeye. However, these animals often don’t get enough focus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe unless they’re in a Guardians of the Galaxy film. It’s no wonder that James Gunn is making sure his DC Universe avoids this pitfall.
In the initial DC Universe film titled “Superman,” there’s a significant presence of Krypto, often referred to as Super Dog. This canine companion aids the Man of Steel in his battle against Lex Luthor, causing trouble for anyone who poses a threat. It’s worth noting that Superman isn’t alone among DC heroes in having a pet. As the franchise expands under Gunn and Co., it could be beneficial to include more animal-related characters to enrich the storyline further.
1) Batman
Krypto is Superman’s top canine companion, but Batman stands out as Superman’s closest human friend. They have a unique bond because they are polar opposites – Superman represents optimism, while Batman tends to anticipate the worst. However, Batman’s brooding nature doesn’t stop him from displaying affection occasionally.
Batman’s canine companion, Ace the Bat-Hound, has been a significant part of Batman’s life since the 1950s. Although he is less frequently seen in more realistic DC Universe stories, it appears that the universe doesn’t mind having pets as part of its cast. Perhaps Ace and Krypto could band together to create the Legion of Super Pets.
2) Shazam
Prior to Ace the Bat Hound making an appearance, Captain Marvel had already gained a fan in Hoppy, a small bunny. Eager to emulate his hero, Hoppy began using the word “Shazam!” and discovered he too possessed powers. Excited by this newfound ability, Hoppy decided to visit the Marvel Family, where he lent a hand in defeating some villains together with them.
Hoppy, on his own, is a hero, implying he wouldn’t create issues when accompanying Shazam following his DCU debut. Having this magical rabbit around might even compensate for the absence of Green Lantern Chip in Superman.
3) Supergirl
In an unexpected twist, Gunn discloses that Krypto, contrary to popular belief, is actually the canine companion of Supergirl, not Superman. As Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El, embarks on her journey to discover her next cosmic destination, Krypto will undoubtedly be by her side. Yet, this new revelation about Krypto’s ownership doesn’t necessarily mean that other animals belonging to Supergirl won’t make an appearance as well.
In DC Comics lore, Supergirl owns a cat named Streaky who acquires powers following contact with a substance called X-Kryptonite. This transformation inspires her to act heroically, much like her human counterpart. As such, she becomes a member of the Legion of Super-Pets, alongside Krypto and Ace. In a potential standalone film for Supergirl, we might witness her first encounter with Streaky and how she takes the cat under her protective care.
4) Aquaman
In this list, all the animals are adorable, but being a sidekick involves more than just cuteness. For instance, Aquaman has an octopus companion named Topo in the comics who can be quite useful in battles with his weapon handling skills. Although Topo is depicted as Arthur Curry’s friend in the DC Extended Universe, there remains potential for this character to develop further.
As a cinephile eagerly anticipating the DCU’s next chapter, I can’t help but ponder the future of Aquaman. While we haven’t received official confirmation about his return yet, I must admit, it would be quite a challenge to follow up on Jason Momoa’s remarkable portrayal in the DCEU.
James Gunn’s universe is already bursting with superheroes, and if he chooses to hint at Aquaman’s presence without actually showing him, I believe that’s perfectly acceptable. After all, a mere mention or a subtle reference could be enough to ignite our curiosity and keep us on the edge of our seats.
Now, let’s delve into the exciting world of the Legion of Super Pets. It’s intriguing to consider Topo potentially joining this esteemed group, even without his owner’s approval. This could lead to some interesting dynamics within the team and open up a plethora of possibilities for future storylines.
In essence, while we await Aquaman’s potential comeback in the DCU, I’m excited about the prospect of exploring new characters and narratives that Gunn’s franchise has in store for us.
5) Robin
Among all Robins, Damian Wayne stands out as the most resilient character. His upbringing under the League of Shadows has undeniably taken its toll, but Damian’s hardships are intensified due to his grandfather being Ra’s al Ghul. Recognizing that his ward could benefit from understanding human nature more deeply, Alfred Pennyworth arranges for him to have a cat as a companion.
Damian gives his cat the name Alfred, showing great affection towards him. As ‘The Brave and the Bold’ prepares for Damian’s live-action introduction, there could potentially be a place for Alfred too, likely competing with Ace over the best spot in the Batcave.
Superman is in theaters now.
