5 Dragon Ball Characters Who Deserve Their Own Arcs

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is a huge and lively world with a large cast of characters, blending action, fantasy, and comedy. Despite many different stories and additions to the series, the main goal has always been to showcase Goku as Earth’s protector and the leader of the Z Warriors. Every story ultimately centers on Goku overcoming a new enemy and proving himself as the hero.

Often, even when other characters get their own storylines, those stories still revolve around Goku or ultimately help him become stronger. This is a shame, because many characters have the potential for compelling stories of their own. We’ve chosen five characters from the Dragon Ball anime who we believe deserve dedicated arcs to explore their own journeys.

5) Dabura

Dabura first appeared as a villain in the final arc of Dragon Ball Z, but the recent Dragon Ball Daima series has shown us a deeper side to his character, proving why he’s worthy of his own story. While originally presented as simply evil, Daima revealed that Dabura was actually a noble ruler who overthrew a tyrannical father, changing our understanding of him.

Dabura had the ability to become incredibly powerful using a special artifact called the Third-Eye, but he intentionally chose not to. This shows he’s actually a heroic figure within the Demon Realm. A separate series focusing on his story would be a great way to showcase his heroic side in the world of Dragon Ball.

4) Uub

The last story arc of Dragon Ball Z, the Majin Buu saga, ended by introducing Uub, who was the rebirth of the final villain. Fans loved this addition, particularly when Goku vowed to train Uub to become Earth’s next protector. This made sense within the story, hinting that the Saiyans wouldn’t always be there to defend Earth and that a human successor was necessary.

Despite this potential, the story was complicated by the ongoing events in Dragon Ball Super. There’s still a chance the franchise could bring Uub back after Super finishes, establishing him as the new protector of Earth and allowing Goku to pass on that responsibility. A film or story arc focusing on Uub’s childhood, training with Goku, and rise as a hero would finally give him the storyline he deserves.

3) Future Trunks

Future Trunks, the son of Vegeta who traveled from a ruined future to alert the Z Warriors of upcoming threats on two separate occasions, is a memorable character who greatly influenced the Dragon Ball series. Despite his importance, he’s consistently been a supporting player, assisting the main heroes rather than leading the story himself.

It’s a shame Future Trunks hasn’t had a dedicated story arc, considering all the potential there is. His experiences, from being the last hope in a destroyed future after Gohan’s death to returning home to warn everyone, offer a lot of compelling material. Given how popular he is with fans, it’s frustrating that we never see what happens to him after he leaves, and he really deserves an arc focused on his life as the future’s only hero.

2) Jiren

Jiren initially seemed like the main villain in the final part of Dragon Ball Super. However, he’s actually a hero from his own universe, and incredibly powerful – even surpassing their God of Destruction. While his backstory was revealed during the Tournament of Power, it felt somewhat predictable despite being emotionally impactful.

A story focusing on Jiren could reveal his past – how he became the most powerful fighter in his universe as an orphan. It could also show what happened to him after the Tournament of Power and bring him back into the story, as Vegeta is still inspired by Jiren’s strength and how it pushes him to improve. In fact, Jiren could be the key to Vegeta finally becoming stronger than Goku, perhaps through training together.

1) Vegeta

Despite being a central character, Vegeta often feels overshadowed by Goku. It sometimes seems like his accomplishments are seen as less significant because Goku did something similar first. For example, even after Vegeta reached Super Saiyan 3 in the recent Dragon Ball series, some fans still point out that Goku achieved it earlier. It’s time for the franchise to address this and give Vegeta the recognition he deserves.

A new story arc could finally let Vegeta outshine Goku by focusing on his development first, maybe even giving him a unique new transformation. Goku could then follow suit, highlighting Vegeta taking the lead for a change. After years of being second to Goku, the Dragon Ball series deserves to give Vegeta a chance to be the strongest, if only for a little while.
